My goodness, it's that time of year again and a small black and white flippered fellow is waddling round impatiently, hoping for the chance to go adventuring to far-flung climes, spreading happiness to Shipmates around the world.

And one of those Shipmates could be you!

The Paschal Penguin is an Easter gift exchange. If you choose to sign up, your details will be sent to another Shipmate and you, in turn, will receive the details of someone else who also joined the game.

You then go shopping. This is the fun bit. You may spend up to a total of £5 on a surprise gift for your recipient. This is mostly on an Easter theme - very often chocolate related but not necessarily. You parcel it all up, post it to your recipient anonymously, and wait... (and possibly wait a bit longer).... for them to post on the thread to acknowledge its arrival and for a parcel to arrive at your address with a specially-chosen pressie just for you.

So, if you're keen to participate, sign up here and send me an email (or a PM) with your real name and address, whether you'd rather post within your own country or are willing to post overseas, and whether you have any preferences/allergies which you might want your sender to know about. In about a fortnight's time I will email you the details of the person you are to send a parcel to. Then it is up to you to get the parcel in the post to arrive around Easter time (and definitely by Pentecost at the very latest).

Mmmm... chocolate.....

So, twenty five people so far are poised and ready, waiting for the details of the lucky person to whom they are to send their gift. The penguin is busy exercising his flippers and webbed feet ready for his long and arduous but oh so rewarding journey.

Who else would like to join us? I'll give it until the end of the week then issue details on Saturday.

I have made all the matches and had begun busily PMing details to everyone, but my ^%*^&$ internet keeps cutting out and I have to get up off my backside and go and reboot the modem every few minutes. I have reached patience-depletedness and will continue the task later this evening when I can face doing ANYTHING involving the INTERNET other than THROWING THE BLOOMIN' MODEM THROUGH THE WINDOW!

Move along please, nothing to see here... apart from a penguin stomping its webbed feet and throwing a tantrum.

I've had mine - thank you muchly Smudgie! Now thinking about what might be acceptable. Internet connections are weird - they carry on for a long while then need a rest. I have just resurrected mine from such a rest by taking a hammer (no sorry I mean having to press the restart button) on my BT Hub. It worked!! Sympathies and hope it is sorted soon. [Roll Eyes]

Phew.

After a long-awaited visit from Mr-Internet-Man, I would appear to have managed to finish successfully PMing on behalf of the penguin, just in time to go to work!

I trust that everybody now has a PM sitting happily in their inbox informing them of the recipient for whom they are to organise a surprise gift. (If not, contact me a.s.a.p so I can put that right).

Please post here once you have entrusted your parcel to the penguin to deliver and again once your own parcel arrives.

Mr-Internet-Man promises that the problem with my internet and telly is now fixed for ever and ever. Do I believe him?

Yes! And as the Paschal Penguin's Personal Aide, I even get this sense of connection to all the people who sign up for the Paschal Penguin. But especially to those people I've sent parcels to.

Good, isn't it?

Today I have received an enigmatic package from Paschal Penguin. Thank you. [Yipee] I will resist the temptation to open it until Easter (if willpower will allow)!
My sendee, on the other hand, will not have to resist because I'm afraid the package is not yet posted though now packed and ready to go. It will be winging its' way on Monday - hope it will arrive in time.

I have already received a lovely laminated card with two dear Kitties on it telling me my parcel is on its way.

I, on the other hand, am still collecting goodies. I hope that MrD will finish his contribution today, so it MAY get posted tomorrow (if Mr D would be so kind as to go to get bread via the Post Office) Sorry, Sendee, it's looking as though Easter Week is a more probable ETA than Holy Week.

A tired little Penguin arrived this morning. Tired not from the distance crossed, but from the weight of the wonderful pot of honey in his beak.

It is very special, obviously produced with love and care. I particularly like the little label on the back of the jar: 'Not Ecessively Filtered. Pollen Grains Remain'

We will save it for Easter morning breakfast.

Posted by Cottontail (# 12234) on :

I arrived home this evening to discover a suspicious bulge under my doormat. Upon inspection, the bulge proved to be, not the Penguin herself (as I had briefly hoped), but certainly the very next best thing: a terribly exciting parcel. Said parcel is unopened and waiting for Easter morn.

Thank you very much, Ms Penguin Ma'am. [Yipee]

Trying to save it for Easter day, but I think the postmark is a giveaway as to who it's from.

Apparently a packet has arrived for me. Since I'm not expecting anything from anywhere else, I can only conclude that my neighbours have kindly taken in a penguin and are looking after it for me.

Penguin came! Penguin came! [Yipee]

A lovely squishy packet with a Royal Mail sticker was waiting for me when I got home. I resisted opening it - for about 30 seconds. [Hot and Hormonal]

I will nobly refrain from eating the teeny Lindt bunny or the Green & Blacks bars until Easter, but the nifty shopping bag will make its debut at the farmer's market on Saturday - if I can ever get it out from under the fuzzy little haunches of Elderkitty.

Many thanks, UK Penguin! (Great self-portrait in the card, BTW).

I'm so sorry - the Penguin got seriously distracted by the sight of me up and down a stepladder, painting ceilings and washing windows. So distracted, he stayed to supervise, as is right and proper according to Elf'n'Safety.

Oooh! Oooh! My Penguin knows me very well - I have soap made from Aberdeenshire rape oil, and jute twine for the garden all the way from Forfar spun on the original 1920s machinery (these things are important!), wrapped in a Verdant Works flyer - plus a bar of Tablet [Yipee] , which I am saving for a day in the lakes next week when we can see northwards across the Solway Firth. It seems apt!

Thank you very, very much. I think my guess from the postcode was spot on - Fit like, Quine?

An unexpected trip to the isle of wight resulted in me not being able to get the parcel into the post before today. It'll be committed to the waiting flippers of the penguin tomorrow morning and hopefully winging its way to one of those people who are still awaiting the arrival of a paschal treat.

Meanwhile, a cheery greeting from the open front door this morning heralded the arrival of a rather special-looking brown envelope. I am not going to open it until I have posted mine tomorrow (conscience doesn't permit!) .... but the eager anticipation is tantalising! [Biased]

Have you ever seen a crying penguin? It happens whenever they deliver an empty envelope from Britain that's been cut open, the contents removed, and the USPS notes that it arrived that way.
So, on behalf of the Sad Penguin, I'd like to thank the Shippie who sent it on its way, even if someone obviously had their way with the package before it arrived.

How very disappointing for you, AA.

On a related note, the Penguin (having been catching it's breath over Easter) is about the leave the building and depart for somewhere south of here.
As it has to waddle, swim, or fly over water it may take a few days.

A penguin enlisted the aid of a French dormouse to deliver a fascinating pack of goodies - a CD with some interesting music, a cat book which I'm very pleased to rehome, a bookmark, mints, a shopping bag (very useful as we have to pay 5p for carriers in Wales), some unusual chocolate (I'd never come across blackberry and ginger!, a fridge magnet and a gorgeous card. Thank you - or should I say Merci Beaucoup!

So sorry to hear that, Ariston. That should be labeled as a crime and the postal authorities should be notified. IMMEDIATELY! [Mad]

I had a lovely package chock full of good things today. My dear PP enclosed the loveliest note, too. The chocolates will be finished up before JB gets home. [Snigger] (I usually share, but these were really good). I am now wearing a lovely cross, have a pysanka for everyone to see, I can't wait to try the soap, and added some fabric to my 'stash'. My PP was extremely generous and has jumped up the list of my favorite shipmates. [Axe murder]

Having at long last posted my parcel on Friday (multitudinous apologies, penguinee) I finally permitted myself to open the parcel sitting tantalisingly on my lounge table.

I was greeted by a very tall, very thin, very yellow, very fluffy er... thing. A parting of the hair revealed the eyes and beak of a very friendly bird who had clealy been busy laying chocolate eggs. More chocolate eggs, two bars of the most delicious chocolate and a bar of tablet......... I felt well and truly spoiled. And all entirely the most delicious tastes I could possibly have asked for.

Thank you thank you paschal penguin. I know I ought to know who you are, but I make a conscious decision when doing the random matchings to take no special note of who is given my details. If I thought about it, I'd remember, but I really love the anonymity and it's one of the few times that I can appreciate my encroaching senior moments. But it is a lovely lovely gift and I can only hope mine brings the same pleasure to its recipient.

(The Smudgelet has his beady eye on all the chocolate and tablet - Strangely enough his beady eye is hidden under a quantity of hair similar to a tall, thin, yellow, fluffy bird's!)

It has just occurred to me- I have reported on the safe arrival of my parcel, but have not said how much we are enjoying the honey it contained! It is rather special and truely delicious.

Thank you again!

Thank you so much to my New Mexico Penguin for my parcel - a lovely cross - local to NM I'm thinking - and some truly spectacular pictures of holy places in the area. I too enjoy the mystery of the PP (well I don't know which of you it was do I).

Apologies for a bit of a delay in posting this; my parcel arrived before the weekend but I've not been able to post before today.

A big Thank You going out to Smudgie for the penguin-herding operations.

Just dropping by to report that most of my bar of tablet was consumed on top of one of the many hills called Dodd in the Lake District, this one with a fine view across the Solway Firth of the land from whence it came. The last bit is waiting for the Knotweed to get her Celtic backside high enough to see it too.

A propos of nothing, Dodd has quite the campest summit cairn I've ever seen - the local rock (syenite) is startlingly pink!

Smudgie, you are a saint and a goddess for doing all this every year.

My gift arrived.... Lovely, lovely!

By my reckoning, the following people are the only ones still awaiting the arrival of their paschal gift (one being the responsibility of a very foolish penguin who allocated the same person to two people simply by missing my aim on the address list [Hot and Hormonal] . Fear not, neglected penguinee, a gift will be on its way forthwith)

JB
Earwig
Japes
North East Quine
Celtic Knotweed

Please can you confirm that you have not yet received a gift and please can anyone else that I've missed post here so that I can keep track of the last few parcels.

It's been such fun reading what people have received... almost as much fun as opening (and devouring) my own parcel [Biased]

Hi Smudgie, no penguins have called at Castle Earwig yet. Waiting in hope! [Big Grin]

No penguin has pitched up here yet.

Still waiting at Casa de JB.

I have posted this evening, and am still to receive!

Still no penguin post for me. Waiting and hoping... (at least I know my penguinee has received their parcel).

Replacement "The Post Is Evil" present received!
Oh, and to at least one of you waiting—it may be a little while, but it is coming together. Oh Believe You Me, we will make it worth the wait.

Thank you, Aussie Paschal Penguin! I received a wonderful pressie from the other side of the world - a mousemat with gorgeous Australian dot art on it. I especially loved the croc - reminded me of our much missed Gator. I shall use it and think of a very kind Shipmate - thank you!

So I get home today and find another package sent via Royal Mail. Now I don't get those very often, so I'm curious.
I got TWO PP's!?!?!? Not only do children get clean drinking water, but I get perhaps the greatest Penguin Package ever?
Dear Penguinee: yes, you remembered that thread correctly.

And I got another parcel! A box arrived from Thorntons with some yummy milk choc and a box of caramels and fudges - phwoar!

Thank you, generous Penguin! [Yipee]

*Bump*
Is there a penguin still peregrinating the planet who ought to be calling in to my place? Or do I assume that the postal services have kidnapped the poor penguin? [Waterworks]

Still no presents recorded as arriving for
JB
Japes
North East Quine
Celtic Knotweed

I have contacted the senders for these parcels but had no reply as yet, apart from the sender of Japes' parcel who this morning informed me it was returned to sender. Japes, did you miss the card the postman put through the door telling you to go and collect your parcel? Would it be safe to resend it?

In the meantime, anyone fancy sending spares?

I'm happy to send another, Smudgie.

I can confirm that no penguin has arrived here.

I'll send a spare, if necessary.

Sorry - I realised I PMed Smudgie, and forgot to post the relevant information here...

The Paschal Penguin, after picking up a nasty dose of flu whilst here and losing the plot in the recovery process, has finally recovered enough to be on the way south from here. (The intention was to post on the way home from work, on 19th April... and things went dramatically downhill on the way home.)

I had no card through the post from the post man - but, I do have neighbours who have sent things back to sender, rather than post through the correct door, and there are three roads of the same name in the city in the middle, so if the post code is wrong, things have gone astray!! It's worth double checking...

The first week of June should be safe for a retry as I'm home for half-term.

And the Perky Pentecostal Penguin is off! Yes, I've have my reasons for being late, but, at long last, the package is in the post.

Now let's see if it gets there intact . . .

One recovered-from-flu-penguin dropped by today and left me a parcel. Many thanks for the assorted Green & Blacks - perfect size for random chocolate munchies! Also perfect in that I can usually eat a bite-size bar of 70% dark without triggering migraines - the temptation to keep eating the bigger bars can be too much at times [Roll Eyes]

Chocolate now being saved to munch on when reading [Big Grin]

The Pentecostal Penguin arrived with a package.

WOW!

I am now a tea drinker.

I am delighted to report the Paschal Penguin has arrived!

Thank you so much for the chocolate which has arrived after the most exhausting two days at work, and which will be enjoyed with much enthusiasm to celebrate all 15 of my students completing and passing their courses.

And now all complete! And before The Nativity of St-Jean-Baptiste!

Huzzah!
Thank you so much to everyone who's taken part. It's been fun, as always, to watch each person's gift arrive.
Now, where's Santa?

No, no penguin has passed by here.

Have you moved? Do you live where you are un-findable?? Do you have a letterbox? Are you penguin allergic? Shall we all club together to show our love to NEQ?

I haven't moved, I'm not unfindable, I've double-checked that I gave Smudgie the correct address, I've got a letterbox, and I'm not allegic to penguins!

I didn't give my full RL name, just firstname, the North East Quine, but that shouldn't be a problem. The usual postman knows me, anyway.
