We usually run this Fitness Race a couple of times a year, in January and July; encouraging those of us who struggle to maintain a regular exercise habit, a month of logging exercise is thought to be a Good Idea™.:

Following the success of the biannual Fitness Races established in November 2007, I hereby present the July 2012 Fitness Race. The rules are pretty much as cribbed from all the previous races, and just because I'm lazy, the January 2012 Fitness Race is available in Oblivion with links to the January 2009 race in Limbo and on back should anyone need to see how it works.

Those who want to take part please can you sign up here, and record the amount of time you have spent exercising from the 1st July onwards - daily / weekly / whatever is most convenient. The person who spent the most time exercising by the 31st July is the winner.

As before, the aim is to log your hours of fitness activity and watch them accumulate over the month. You can be a serious gym junkie or an occasional cyclist, the important thing is to take some time out of your month to spend being active.

The rules are simple (and almost identical to last time):

It has to be physical activity. It doesn't have to be overly strenuous as long as it's aerobic. After some discussion previously, house work and gardening counts, so long as it's aerobic and so serious welly is put into it, but music practice doesn't.
The race is based on time, rounded to the nearest minute. If you spend 5 minutes walking down the street to buy milk, it counts.
If you're paid to be active (eg. as a builder), you can't count time spent on your job; The rest of us need to have a chance! However, you can count active transport that gets you to work (eg. walking, running, cycling, unicycling...).
You can sign up whenever you like, but you can only count time spent after you sign up.

The race starts at midnight July 1 (local time) and finishes at midnight August 1 (local time).

All right then, tie your shoelaces and get ready to go. Over the previous threads the top 5 people took regular daily exercise, little and often worked. Walking or cycling places is good for you and adds up, so leave the car behind and cut your carbon footprint too. Walking recalcitrant babies or toddlers around the block built up useful amounts. Also use your weekends wisely to take extra exercise.

If you are London based, I'm going to suggest a walk on 7th July - we started trying for a monthly walk, and managed January and March, but have failed pretty much since - Easter, May Day bank holiday and the Jubilee weekend not helping for the first Saturdays of April, May and June. I'll set that one up in All Saints.

Please can I also point people who want to chat about fitness rather than log times to the Fitness Thread, Exercise Book in All Saints.

Having been absent for several Fitness Races, I'll join in this one and see what I can log on here. It might be an inspiration to try more of the non-climbing things that seem interesting. [Smile]

Right, this time I'm definitely in. And this time I will stay in right the way through July (though I am away for one week of it so will probably not get to post often).

But obviously you're just postponing it to next week so it counts for the race, aren't you Smudgie?

Please count me in CK. I was hoping I'd see this posted as I missed January, because of pain caused by something the physiotherapist called 'sacro-illiac hypermobility'! Various exercises seem to have done the trick, but I'm keeping fingers crossed!

I'll try. July sees me leading two seminars in Germany and I won't have much access to the internet, so my updates will be late. I'll be back on the 30th or 31st though, so will manage to post my updates in time.

I've gained a right belly lately, so some fitness work is very much needed. Luckily both seminars will be in places where one can play football and table-tennis, and hopefully there'll be some lads in my groups up for a kick about.

Unfortunately due to my current pregnant circumstances I am going to rule myself out at the moment. I am still exercising but at a much reduced level and I know if I sign myself up I will feel as competitive as ever!

Since changing jobs, I'm a lot less active; my 2 hour round-trip bike commute is now down to 40 minutes - and lo, the tuchis swelleth greatly. I'm going to take a page out of comet's book and try to mix it up with as many different activities as I can.

I'm considering going to a personal trainer, I hope starting this week. If this isn't considered quite the thing, I'd be happy to sit out, or not count the trainer sessions or something. Does anyone have an opinion? It doesn't seem very fair somehow.

Posted by Ultracrepidarian (# 9679) on :

I think it's fine to count training sessions.

I'm going to have to work out how much of a day out climbing is actual physical activity and how much is standing around and chatting. [Ultra confused] This may be tricky - my first climbing outing of July will be tomorrow!

Cycled to church today (3 miles there, 3 miles back) and spent most of the afternoon shifting furniture, including a (digital) piano and a filing cabinet - does moving furniture count?

Tea gnome, I have had sessions with a personal trainer (Christmas present) and I definitely think you should count them - it's far harder than training by yourself because if you are finding an exercise too easy they will make you do a different one. Worth it though. Good luck.

Posted by Curiosity killed ... (# 11770) on :

@JaneR - furniture moving counts - but you haven't given me any times.

Posted by Deputy Verger (# 15876) on :

Well, from my flying start I've only got 40 minutes of ringing and 20 minutes of cycling to count, for a round total of one hour meaning already losing on Day One!

I've got a conundrum. It took me 3½ hours to walk 6 miles today. Now some of that is the number of photos I took (10 minutes hanging around taking pictures of feeding swallows, 10 minutes crawling around the ground looking at a beetle) and I'm going to take off ½ hour for that, but 3 hours for 6 miles is pathetic, even after battling through an overgrown path on a rape field and along the pathway that had been reploughed in. However, I have an excuse for being slow, as I'm recovering from pneumonia. Fit it would take me about 2 - 2½ hours so I'm not sure how much to count.

Heavy rains/thunderstorms put paid to my planned Canada Day bike ride; instead, I got in 30 minutes of house-cleaning and 10 minutes walking to and from the grocery store (where I had a free piece of Canada Day cake, thus negating any minimal fitness benefits realized by the walk).

Ah well, tomorrow is another day . . .

Throw in another 20 minutes for biking to and from the further Metro stop in order to watch the Tour . . . and drink $2 local microbrews.

Not a flying start for me, just forty minutes walking. But my Sundays are busy.

All righty.

Climbing on 1 July

10 minutes of cycling (with a big pack of gear) to/from where we were meeting to go on the trip.

15 minutes of walking (with a big pack of gear) between the car and the crag at the other end.

Now it gets tricky. We got to the crag at about 11am, and left about 7pm. I forgot to time how much time I spent actually climbing. (A lot of climbing is just standing around, anyway.) I climbed ten relatively short routes, and would definitely have spent less than half the time climbing, once you think about belaying, eating, faffing with rope etc. 15 minutes a route would give me 2 hours 30 minutes, which is probably about right (maybe a bit of an underestimate), but doesn't seem much for a full day outside being 'active'!

2 July

So far, 25 minutes of a morning run, and 10 minutes of commuter cycling.

Posted by Jane R (# 331) on :

Sorry, forgot we had to give times!

In that case my score for 1 July is as follows:

Cycling - 1 hour (about 25 minutes there, 35 minutes back because I went the scenic route)
Furniture moving - about 1.5 hours (we had to empty the bookcase and filing cabinet before we moved them which took a long time).

Total (1 July): 2 hours 30 minutes

Today is a rest day, so I will probably only do the Walk To School, but I may be taking Daughter swimming if she's not too tired. I will post my score for today later on.

Monday 2 July 27 minutes

Not as good as yesterday, but still -

15 minutes medium to high-speed walking (inside Tesco's, does that count?)
10 minutes more high-speed walking (giving a new meaning to the phrase 'school run')
2 minutes doing jacks (star jumps / jumping jacks)

Hmph, having said I hoped I wouldn't be afflicted by the cold again, I promptly went and caught one. So in two days I've done 30 minutes of walking, which isn't great, but I couldn't really go to a kickboxing class when I have to blow my nose every 10 minutes... Still, later in the week I will be back on form!

Better from me today. Walking is a bit hard to calculate - to the metro to get to work and to the supermarket, and also to look at the sales during the lunch hour, which involved quite a lot of mooching. I think I can justify 40 minutes.

On the proper cardio front 1 hour 10 minutes running this evening. Heads up to the unmotivated: stick The Final Countdown on your ipod. Yes, it's cheesy as hell and it is the POWER. (Actually once I get out and hit the road I can feel quite motivated, it's just the getting out there part I have a problem with [Roll Eyes] I think I need a holiday.)

I'm not keeping a running total (no pun intended) because my arithmetic skills are crap.

Twenty minutes walking at lunchtime including a lot of stairs.

And 2x15 = 30 mins cycling in the evening for a total of 50 minutes for day two.

50 minutes of heavy duty cleaning - moving furniture, boxes, yard detritus and firewood. it was couched within about 3 hours of total work, but the rest was more sedate work.

capped off with 35 minutes of belly dancing - just because the music took over and I had to. [Big Grin]

now, to shower and bike in to work. yay! the race is saving me gas.

...'cept I procrastinated and was almost late even with the car. BUT! I then took the car to my daughter's place of work and walked home from there, so I can at least tack on an additional 25 minutes to my daily total. if the allergies let up I'm going dancing, too...

(storing up time now 'cause the holiday "weekend" - i.e. wednesday-sunday - is going to suck the life out of me)

a sad little 15 minutes of dancing. apparently I can't resist getting all worked up when someone engages me in a conversation about freedom of speech and expression... and the next thing I know the time for dancing is over and it's time to go to bed.

OK, so this dog-walking thing is really going to work out for me. Obviously there will be days when I trade off dog-walking for something else with my flatmate, but I definitely feel good about getting off to such a good start. I think the last few races I've joined I have nearly squeaked up to 60 minutes a day, so my target this time is probably to push that all the way up to 90 minutes.

The trick is going to be keeping up a level of activity in August, when I move closer to work and the dog's family gets back. Ho hum.

We don't have to, I do because of the weird way my days tend to get split over separate posts - if I add up per post and per day and they come to the same thing then there's a chance my maths has worked! Posting a pathetic 15 minutes walking down to the doctor's and back (and missed the drop in appointment window). Grump, I had plans for decorating.

If you keep totals, it helps if you post them because it lets me double check as we go along. If you tell me 3½ weeks in that you don't think our totals match I have to go back through ten pages checking everything, which makes me unhappy.

Harmony Hope, I had exactly the same problem today - confined to the house taking care of indisposed child. So I only managed a pathetic 2 minutes jacks (I did some running up and down stairs too, but not often enough to raise a sweat). I am going to try to do jacks for at least a couple of minutes each day - maybe it will make a difference.

This brings my running total to (checks previous posts) 2 hours 59 minutes which is not even going to get me into the top ten, but never mind - as my daughter said when persuading me to take part in the mother's race last Sports Day, It's Taking Part That Counts.

Which makes 1 hour 30 minutes altogether.

Another 35 minutes of cycling to and fro between work, shopping and choir practice.

3 July

So, only 15 minutes of cycling to the train station.

4 July

So far, 5 minutes of cycling to get to work.

Wednesday, July 4th: (so far)
30 mins walking dog
15 mins walking to and from a graduation

Total to add: 110 minutes
Toal so far: 290 minutes or 4 hours and 50 minutes

Processing at graduations is so tiring, the standing around, sitting for a couple of hours in front of all the graduands and parents (requiring decent posture and interested facial expression) and then the milling around being congratulatory afterwards. All in a heavy gown and heels. None of it is aerobic though, so I can't count any of those minutes.

Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze the dog-walk in between work and graduation celebrations tonight, she was going a bit bonkers when last night's walk had to be postponed until after an evening graduation.

20 more mins walking yesterday and the same today, makes 40 mins to add.

I think that makes my running total 300 mins, but willing to be corrected!

Harmony Hope - I make your total 195 minutes or 3 hours 15 minutes - 3 lots of an hour on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Monday 15 minutes.

Jane R - I am a minute out from you - made today's total a minute more than you did.

Today's pathetic offering was 10 minutes walk to the GP, 3 hours wait to be seen, 5 minutes back to the chemist for more antibiotics, then off to the supermarket for milk. I think I can count 30 minutes walking at normal speeds, but I met people, so it was stop start.

Day 3 - Tuesday One hour killer pilates.

Day 4 - today - a meagre 15 mins walk each way to pub and back = 30 mins plus, thanks to Comet's inspiration 5 minutes on the Hula Hoop from Hell (it had been hidden but she reminded me).

Running total, I think (2 hr 85 mins) = 3 hrs and 15 mins. Not good, not bad. It is what it is. Tomorrow is a day off for a walk... so watch this space!

I went back over it and I get 1hr + 50m + 1 hr + 35m. Oh yes, you're right! Thanks! [Hot and Hormonal] Silly me.

Yesterday I just about doubled it: one hour cycling in the morning (errands and getting slightly lost), two hours walking in the noonday sun. Yes, sun. In London!

And then a 45 minute walk in the evening to go see the lighting up of the Shard, which was not as good from where I stood as the Daily Wail makes out. And then a combo of bus/walk home afterwards, for another 10 minutes on the hoof. Total for Thursday therefore: 3hrs 55 mins.

Gosh, more than doubled it. Running total now... 7 hrs and 20 mins.

4 July

15 minutes of cycling from work to pub and from pub to home.

5 July

35 minutes of cycling from home to work to climbing to home,

I spent 3 hrs 30 at the climbing wall and I was quite busy, doing a lot of bouldering, so I'll count that as 2 hours of exercise for the purposes of the fitness race.

6 July

10 minutes of cycling to get to work.

This afternoon is the departmental cricket day. I don't play cricket but, on the other hand, I'm helping to look after the small children, so I'll probably get more exercise than the people out on the field. [Big Grin]

At least 1 hour 30 minutes walking yesterday. There's also 15 minutes of cleaning the house in there that I forgot about the other day.

I think I'm reasonably pleased with my progress so far. I know I'm under my best totals - some years I manage to average 2 hours a day - but it's been a crazy busy week. Also running to work cuts time off the total but it results in a much better work-out.

Yup, dog walking is definitely the answer. Probably not enough to make me actually want a dog though. Flatmate is working tomorrow so I'll probably take the dog out for a nice long wander if the weather's decent. And then there's a ceilidh in the evening for some more high-energy activity. There should probably also be some vigorous housework this weekend too.

No time for any physical exercise yesterday due to a manic shift (starting at 6.15am), a training day at work (lots of sitting around feeling depressed!) and then messy church. Though, to be honest, I am sure I ought to be able to claim triple for every second spent at Messy Church. Surely? Even if I was sitting down for most of it.

Bit pathetic, this.
Not much that could be called exercise over the last few days; feeling distinctly below par and running recently has been rubbish.

Thus, all I can add now is a day's sailing/supporting sailing yesterday of which only about 30 minutes could be called moderately strenuous (using paddle to get in as wind died, hauling boats in/out of water, and so forth); and 30 minutes walking (to/from shops) and 35 minutes running today. Thus 1 h 35 m to add.

Not very impressive. And I doubt if I'm going to get much chance to run/gym over the next few days.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

5 minutes of running around and climbing with small children.

Got some catching up to do:

July 4 - rainrainrain so I took the train to work - still got in 45 minutes walking

July 5 - 40 minutes cycling to and from work, along with 12 minutes walking at noon.

July 6 - 40 minutes cycling, and 20 minutes walking and stair-climbing

Today - 1 hour cycling to the farmer's market and library, followed by 25 minutes on my hands and knees washing floors and scrubbing the rugs in the wake of elderkitty's latest barf-o-rama.

We're heading into a heat wave, so not sure how much outdoor exercise I'll get this week as hot weather and I do not coexist peacefully.

Right. I'm up to 185 minutes to this post.
I can add to Friday half an hour walking (noodles and pub), it might have been a bit more, but forgot to time.
Yesterday I went to Stirling castle with a friend. We spent most of 12-6 walking about but that includes stopping for lunch and things, and to be fair quite a bit of it wasn't really very aerobic.
I think I can give myself 90 minutes. It was a very good afternoon out.
So total to the end of this post is 305 minutes I think or five hours and five minutes.

Declaring 3 hours walking yesterday - collecting daughter from a train, so 15 mins to tube, 10 mins changing at Bank and getting to right place at St Pancras. Then we walked down to South Bank via Grays Inn Road and Waterloo Bridge, walked along South Bank to Tate Modern and climbed up and down the stairs (well two escalators, but the rest was stairs) to the top floor to find we'd just missed tea, then to tube at St Paul's and detour home via supermarket. It took longer, but we were moving pretty fast, faster than my lungs wanted to go.

50 minutes morning yoga today 7/7. "morning" in my case being 2 pm. I soooo needed it after working so many hours on my feet - Wednesday and Thursday were both 14+ hour days, and friday was at least 10. my body was stiff and achy everywhere.

add to that a 20 minute walk that should have been longer but the rain became a torrent. no dancing tonight as I got no breaks from behind the bar, but it was okay because even if it doesnt count for the race, my work this week has probably burned a ton of calories! hooray for the end of the long holiday weekend.

2 hours cycling to Charlbury for a friend's birthday barbecue (via work to print out a map and via a small detour when I got lost). The ominous weather held off for long enough for us all to enjoy the barbecue!

15 minutes cycling home from the train station. (I don't count cycling from my friend's place to Charlbury station as exercise, as this was largely cruising down hill!)

Wed 4th July - 70 minutes cycling to work & back
Thur 5th July - 70 mins cycling to work and back
Fri 6th July - nothing at all
Sat 7th July - 20mins (5 min walk to hairdresser, 5 min mad dash to cash machine as I didn't have enough money, 5 min dash back to hairdresser, 5 min walk home).
Sun 8th July - managed to squeeze a bit of sport watching in between church and more church - but no time for actual exercise.
Mon 9th July - 80 mins walking half way to work and half way home again.

OK, so I opted in at lunchtime on Wed 4 July, then forgot to post for several days. So here's something of a catch-up post.

4 July, 30 minutes cycling home.

5 July, 30 minutes getting to work, 40 minutes getting home by the scenic (and muddy!) towpath. I make that 1 hour 10 minutes for the day.

6 July, just 4 minutes walking between work carpark and work site. After the problems trying to get home when there were serious traffic incidents on 2 of my 3 possible routes, I couldn't face going out on the bike that evening...

7 July. Nothing to count for the race. Just one of those days.

8 July
That's 49 minutes for the day.

9 July, 30 minutes to work and 30 minutes home again, making 1 hour for the day.

Total so far is 3 hours 33 minutes. Better get moving!

Sorry, busy weekend with offspring home.

Sunday 7 - logging 60 minutes walk to and from tube includes 30 minutes rushing to find an atm while daughter waited in the queue for the recording of Old Harry's Game

Monday 8 - 2½ hours putting offspring on train and puddle hunting, to do so I walked a variation on the route from Saturday, took in Trafalgar Square but missed out Tate Modern. Also managed to move faster.

manana I'll do a catch up, but I reckon both Harmony Hope and Jane R have undercounted their times.

Just as well this isn't the maths thread...

Monday, July 9th:
20 mins walking to and from shops and lunch
75 mins walking dog
5 mins trampolining with dog in an effort to tire her out before a visitor arrived

Tuesday, July 10th (so far)
20 mins walking from garage to bus stop after dropping car off

Total to add: 120 minutes
Total so far: 950 minutes or 15 hours and 50 minutes

CK, you're a marvel! It's enough of challenge for me to keep my total under control, I'm always impressed that you keep them all straight.

All this miserable drizzle is not inspiring me to get out there and move, so hopefully the fitness race and the fact that I have forgotten my packed lunch will get me out at lunchtime today. And flatmate took the dog while I took the car this morning so I have a bit of catching up with myself to do. This week could have a good spread of dancing across it though, so that might help.

Thanks CK. I am genuinely surprised to be on top - I don't feel like I've put as much time in as some previous years, so that's nice.

I have a nasty feeling I have picked up Scots Lass's cold (can you catch a cold over the internet?). Took lots of vitamins and ran to work but fairly slowly and feeling a bit groggy. 8km/50 minutes. Here's hoping the exercise will give my immune system a kick up the backside...

Thanks CK! I was wondering how I was going - I haven't been keeping track this year. I'm pleased to see that I'm not doing badly at all so far. [Big Grin]

And it's very interesting to see the old times. I can definitely see the year where I got busy and dropped out!

9 July

50 minutes walking from work to choir practice to pub to home. I left my bike at work to avoid any chaos associated with the torch relay!

10 July

40 minutes walking to work from home.

Total today is as follows:

40 minutes at the gym
40 minutes high-speed walking
1 hour 30 minutes heavy cleaning

Total for today: 2 hours 50 minutes

Running total: 15 hours 12 minutes

I may not be able to post for the next couple of days - if so I will catch up on Friday.

Another 70 minutes cycling to work and back again today bringing the total to 9hrs 5 mins

In January I was trying for an average of half an hour a day (so 15hrs 30mins) and at 14 hrs 55 mins just failed.

Hopefully I'll beat that this time - at the moment I look right on target to just fail to double January. [Smile]

My new bright red Nikes have arrived [Big Grin] (woohoo for women's sportswear that isn't fuschia pink!!) Haven't actually tried running in them yet but they definitely feel bouncier than the old pair. Hopefully my little knees are going to feel happier.

Tuesday, July 10th: (cont)
20 mins walking to and from shops for lunch

Wednesday, July 11th (so far)
35 mins walking dog
20 mins walking to work

Total to add: 140 minutes
Total so far: 1090 minutes or 18 hours and 10 minutes

I'm happy that once I made up for missing the first day I managed to get my daily average over 90 minutes of activity, with 7 out of 11 days being over 100. Just got to keep it up but that shouldn't be a great challenge barring accident or illness.

This means that beating all my previous times should be a breeze, but maybe I should keep a bit of a lid on it - by the time the January race comes around I will live nearer to work and will have returned the dog.

Day 9 - bit desperate only 5 mins walking(Ugandan visitors and daylong course and daughter's trip abroad scuppered me!)but determined to log some exercise every day!

Day 10 - 60 mins dog walking

Day 11 - 60 mins dog walking...honestly I'm not that boring and I do try and do other exercise but the dogs do need their walk and I still have visitors...

Making a total of 635 mins I think - apologies CK if I keep adding it up wrong..very tired which doesn't help my mental maths! [Big Grin]

10 July

25 minutes cycling from work to climbing wall to home.

Roughly 1 hour 15 minutes worth of exercise at the climbing wall (a bit less than half the time I spent there). I'm sure I'd be very depressed if I worked out how much time was actually spent on the wall rather than standing around at the bottom trying to work out how to do a climb or waiting for my arms to recover. [Disappointed]

11 July

15 minutes cycling to work.

Total altogether nine hours five minutes I think.

Bit of up-catching to do. Monday – an hour ringing, and about half an hour walking (including heaps of stairs, which are an occupational hazard), for 1h30m.

Tuesday 10th, one hour Pilates, an hour ringing (two-hour practice of which I was busy at least half the time), plus walking to and from bus and pub… at least half an hour, for another 2hrs30m. The weather is just too changeable to risk cycling. When it rains it really really rains.

Wednesday 11th – just 30 minutes ringing this evening, and about the same in transit. 1hr.

Total for three days (approx but conservative): 5 hours for a running total of 17hours 20mins.

Thanks, Curiosity, for the maths. You are a star. You hardly need our own calculations. Sadly the missing Jan 2011 race is the one in which I did well, but I forget the specifics. I remember being close to Blackbeard and Rosa Winkel and Comet, I think. Something weird with my last summer total unless I dropped out with less than an hour recorded! But I don’t remember and it doesn’t matter. It’s a new game, and I feel older!

Spent the last few days sailing, which had its moments (mainly due to very odd weather) but of course doesn't count. About the only thing which would count is a walk, on the island off the Hampshire coast, from Folly to Newport and back - about 2 hours total. And in sailing wellies, which, considering the state of the path, was just as well. Went past the site for the Isle of Wight festival - scene of desolation and mud.

So, 2 hours to add my my paltry total. Must do better, but not sure when the opportunity will arise.

Rather strangely I ought to have my total from the January 2011 race, but I seem to have overwritten it with my August 2011 times. Ho Hum.

Tonight I have to go and teach 175 guides some ceilidh dances. This will involve demonstrating each dance so I'll eke out a few minutes, but mostly I suspect I will be standing around directing traffic. Goodness knows when the dog will get her walk this evening. Perhaps I shall take her on the trampmoline again (which mostly involves her running circuits around the garden then joining in for a bounce every so often) so she has at least moved before we get back late and are faced with a furry whirlwind wanting out.

40 mins walking dog

Friday, July 13th (so far)
20 mins walking to work - flatmate started work later than me this morning so she took the dog after I left.

Total to add: 125 minutes
Total so far: 1350 minutes or 22 hours and 30 minutes

Oooops! Please ignore the 5 for 2 substitution typo from yesterday. Getting to 50 hours this early in the game would be impressive indeed!

Well, ceilidh dancing with the guides was interesting. 'There's a marquee' they said. And there was, but how they expected that many girls to dance in it was beyond me. So we set up outside and turned the generator off every time we needed to give instructions then had multiple people relaying them once the generator and the music had been started up. They seemed to enjoy themselves.

Yesterday (12 July) mainly boat related but the only bit that might count would be 10 m total hauling boats up slipways. (They are called slipways due to algal growth with an apparently negative coefficient of friction, leaving the unwary embarrassed, bruised and very wet.)

Today, Friday 13th, about an hour walking plus 35 m runnish.

So total for two days is 1 h 45 m.

Not having a car is going to up my times considerably - that mammoth dog walk last night was a trek out to our usual Friday-night park (and an attempt to get to the middle of the maze there without losing the dog!) to keep a little variety in the routine.

Now I have some errands to run in town so it will be on my bicycle, although I'm not really looking forward to peddling up the hill again on the way home.

Heavy shifts at work are a nightmare - nothing really that can be logged but I am left too physically tired to exercise.

Off on holiday tomorrow and have booked myself in to the local gym so who knows... I will try to record my exercise while I'm away and post a mammoth score when I get back.... (believe that and you'll believe anything!)

What's more likely is that I'll spend the whole week moping under canvas at the sound of the torrential rain battering down on the tent roof (hopefully not through the tent roof) and comfort eating.

Going to walk to Eiffel Tower for the Bastille Day fireworks later which should usefully build up some more time (it's a fair walk, but the crowds on the metro on the 14th of July terrify me).

I'm definitely not going to win (it's interesting to see how much extra walking you rack up if you have a dog to exercise) but it's interesting seeing how many of my everyday activities count as Keeping Fit, and this is encouraging me to keep up with the gym visits. Yesterday - was out at the Town Festival for 4 hours, but the thing I was supposed to be doing that's more aerobic didn't happen: it's too dangerous to open the church tower when it's raining (lead gets very slippery). I think I can count 60 minutes - in little spurts, moving to get to take pictures of something happening, and then keeping pace while it happened - that also includes 10 minutes of stretches.

I now have a kitchen painted sunshine yellow and aching muscles. It took 2½ hours to paint it, after at least another 2½ hours to finish sanding, filling, scrubbing down and taking everything out, then putting it all back in. So I'm counting 5 hours.

7/12: tons of physical work, but on-clock. so I can only claim 30 minutes dancing once I clocked out.

7/13: again with the hard work day, so a mere 20 minutes walk.

7/14: [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] ! day off. we left early to drive to the state park and set up camp. (hiking to site, hauling stuff, cutting and splitting wood, schlepping some trees, etc) then took off on a hike to K'sugi Ridge by way of the waterfall trail. not much milage but a major climb - any steeper and we would have needed to be roped. my kids are natural goats and rocked it, though scared hell out of me a few times. hike back to camp was slower as downhill is tricky for me nowadays with my erratic sense of balance. the rain stayed mostly at bay the whole time!

took a few breaks to play in the waterfall and whatnot, plus great moments of profound slack at the camp, so I'm counting a day's total of 7 hours, 30 minutes which includes camp set-up, wood prep, hike, and post hike swim.

I'm happily not terribly sore.

today, 7/15: took down camp and hiked out (the rain showed up to help us hustle out!) for a total of 45 minutes. I may have more today but I doubt it.

Saturday, July 14th: (cont)
10 mins cycling to town (it's downhill but I was trying to get there in a hurry so I peddled most of the way anyway)
30 mins walking between shops
20 mins cycling home
60 mins walking dog

Sunday, July 15th
20 mins walking dog
35 mins walking to church
45 mins walking home
45 mins walking dog (because she got her usual hour, but I spent some of it looking on as she played in the burn)

Monday, July 16th (so far)
35 mins walking dog
30 mins walking to work the long way 'round

[b]Total to add: 330 minutes

Total so far: 1880 minutes or 31 hours and 20 minutes

Wow! I'm at the top! At least I can use that as a positive aspect of no longer having access to a car. I don't really expect to stay there long though - la vie en rouge has made it past 60 hours in a previous fitness race and a few others have been close before as well. Which would mean I was aiming for 2 hours activity a day. Looking at my spreadsheet I have managed that on eight out of the fourteen full days I've posted so far. And most of those were since the car was consigned to motoring history. So it might be do-able. I'll stick with my 45 hours target for now (that only requires about an hour a day for the rest of the month) but once I hit that I really ought to aim for 60.

I don't know, you might still get there... Ironically being fitter than I was in the past means that I rack up less time [Roll Eyes] My big scores in the past involved a lot of walking - this month I have been running instead, which is a better work-out, more calories burned etc. but less time to record. I'm pretty sure I won't get to 60 hours this time round.

OTOH, I have a strong competitive streak and since I'm near the top I think I'd quite like to win and consequently intend to give you a good run for your money [Biased]

Considering where I am on the list I need to get moving! Aiming for over 1 hour/day, which just means getting a little bit of exercise over the weekend. I wrote down my times for the last few days to keep track of them, and have left them at home [Roll Eyes] - and having problems logging on from work...

ETA - so now that I'm logging in and posting at the same time, it lets me? [Confused] Work computer system gets odder.

Okay - my lovely visitors now safely on their way home and some space at last and apologies for mass posting! So:

Day 12 - 60 mins doggy walking yet again!plus 10 mins strenous digging in terribly wet soil makes 70 mins

Day 13 - 60 mins ditto

Day 14 - 55 mins ditto doggy plus 45 mins extra walking at a pace to get to theatre on time ("Sister Act")makes 90 mins

Day 15 - 65 mins walking miraculously without dogs!

Day 16 (today) - 60 mins usual routine!

So I make that 275 extra hours added to running total of 635 mins makes I think 910 mins.

THank you CK for all your hard work on this! [Overused]

Most of this was hiking in Oregon. Today we arrived in Seattle, and IF and I were walking around the city, and I was kinda done walking and about to complain when we ran into one of my soccer heroes and I got to shake his hand. I'm beginning to be convinced that exercise isn't all evil... [Razz]

Oh, right. I shall have to dredge up some competitiveness from somewhere to make it worth your while then. I almost let my flatmate take the dog out on her own last night because I was at the top of the list and wasn't feeling great.

Now I just have to work out which combination of walking/cycling will get me the most minutes while providing the optimum laundry/shopping/dogwalking schedule. And take advantage of the sunshine.

Ooh. Been a bit busy and haven't posted times for a while.

12 July

25 minutes cycling from work to climbing to home.

About 1 hr 15 mins worth of exercise at the climbing wall.

13 July

40 minutes cycling from home to work to train station to home.

10 minutes of brisk walking from my (late-arriving) train to meet up with friends in London.

14 July

40 minutes walking to the shops and back home.

30 minutes cycling to different shops and to work to check email (my computer is broken [Frown] ) and back home.

25 minutes evening run.

15 July

About 1 hour's worth of walking from the parking to the far end of Bamford Edge for climbing, and then back along the paths at the end of the day.

I don't know how much time was spent climbing at Bamford, or how much climbing counts as exercise (a lot of it just involves standing around, albeit in precarious positions). I'm going to guess 2 hours 30 mins on the basis that we did six climbs and 25 mins per climb sounds about right for Sunday. (I know that 25 mins to go 10 metres is a bit slow, but we were going the hard way!).

16 July

50 minutes cycling from home to work to choir to a friend's place to home.

17 July

15 minutes cycling to work.

***

I'm now going to be away for the rest of the week on holiday and out of computer contact. On the other hand, it's going to be an active holiday helping friends with plastering and maintenance work on a house in Wales (isn't plastering what everyone does on holidays?) so hopefully I'll have some exercise to report from that.

Queries first:

harmony hope, you've under-counted somewhere on your post on 16 July by 70 minutes - I made you'd got to 980 minutes at the end of that post, and 1035 minutes, 17 hours 15 minutes by the end of today's post.

Liberty I made your total to the end of 16th July come to 1660 minutes, 27 hours 40 minutes - which was level pegging with la vie en rouge, until she posted.

Today - I managed to get sidetracked into 45 minutes decorating this morning, then 10 + 15 minutes brisk walking to get where I was going for an appointment, and 2½ hours walking back. By road, it's 4½ miles, but I managed to find ways of adding on extras in the Forest by taking the wrong path and doubling back on myself at least once, and it's less direct that route anyway. So I'm getting faster, particularly considering how skiddy and boggy the conditions were underfoot in places. That's 3 hours 40 minutes

Having finally got me, my note of times, and a computer, all in the same place, here goes with a catch-up post.

12 July: 29 minutes biking to work; 40 minutes biking from my workplace to Sandemaniac's workplace in torrential downpour; 20 minutes getting home. Total for day of 1 hour 29 minutes, and a pair of work shoes which didn't dry out completely till Sunday. [Frown]

13 July: 29 minutes getting to work and 28 getting home. Only managed 10 minutes ringing at practice due to being a bit late, and had to drive due to running late... Total for day of 1 hour 7 minutes.

14 July
Total for the day of 2 hours 24 minutes.

15 July
Total for the day of 4 hours 32 minutes.

16 July: 30 minutes getting to work; 27 minutes from work to parental abode; 27 minutes getting home. Total for day of 1 hour 24 minutes.

17 July: 30 minutes getting to work and 29 minutes getting home. Total today is 59 minutes.

Total this post 11 hours 55 minutes, new running total 18 hours 15 minutes. Looks like having to keep an eye on the parental abode whilst they're away is upping my times. [Big Grin]

Friday 13th 1 hour swimming and cycling
Saturday 14th 25 minutes cycling to work
Sunday 15th I think I can claim a further 1 hour walking
Monday was supposed to be leaving work on time and going straight to the gym, but turned into leaving 3 hours late so 25 minutes getting to and from work.
Today Tuesday 17th 1 hour and 20 minutes walking.

Total for this post 250 minutes or 4hours 10minutes I think. So still quite a bit of catching up to do.

15 July—there may be more details later, but 3 hours, 30 minutes mountain biking—and, well, I should get an hour extra credit for having an epic crash, right? I caught air going over a bump, took a helmet header when I flew off the bike (which flipped three times on its way down the trail without me), and turned my knee, both elbows, and part of my chin into hamburger. No broken ribs, lost teeth, or fractured skulls, though, so I guess it wasn't that bad of a wreck—and the black bears will probably enjoy the bits of me left on the trail.
16 July—24 minutes walking. Cut me some slack, I was bleeding!
Today—4 hours hiking, bouldering, wading, and fishing. Turns out I sometimes recover quickly.

My Goodness AA, I can't top that! [Eek!] I do hope you heal quickly!

I am posting just to surrender. It's been a week, and a very busy week. Today has been the usual Tuesday cocktail of Pilates and bells and cycling and walking. The weekend was full of heavy lifting. The problem is that I haven't posted for a week and I have been so blerry active that I haven't even kept good notes. I can't reconstruct it in good conscience.

So I am bowing out. Good luck the rest of you - I'll still be lurking! Thanks CK. Hopefully next time I won't go off the radar in the middle of the race.

tomorrow - we start Insanity. I'm scared!

AristonAstuanax - I haven't added in a bonus hour for falling off your bike, unless you give me more reason than that.

Just to encourage people, To the Pain and la vie en rouge have managed more than 30 hours exercise so far this month (33½ hours and 30h 35m respectively)

A lot of us are close behind, list below of everyone who has averaged around an hour a day or more - and I should keep going to those who've averaged half an hour a day or more for health with the reports this morning, but this is midweek update because so many people have come back with lists of exercise over the past few days.
me 29¾ hours*

I have traded tomorrow's morning dog walk because I have a cake to make tonight that I want to ice in the morning, but flatmate is probably off work so she didn't think it was a hardship. Times posted yesterday for Monday were in fact Tuesday's - quoting myself to avoid doing the code each time tripped me up.

Turned out I didn't have baking to do (just as well, the banana muffins from the weekend are still in the cupboard) so I walked the dog with flatmate but came on to work rather than going all the way home with them. Meant that I got what might be described as a lie-in.

Today I have set a timer on the oven to hopefully have the dinner cooking when I get home - friends are coming to meet the dog and we're all going for a walk so the food needs to be fairly speedy. Fingers crossed this works!

Oh, this quoting things is really not working out for me - the 40 minute dogwalk to work I posted yesterday was Thursday's. Really must be more careful.

So I've broken 40 hours which is pleasing. Another couple of days and I should have hit my original 45 hour target which will be good. In other news I have discovered how to make the oven turn on for a predetermined interval at a specific time - made a very successful roast gammon last night. Of course, finishing it all between four of us (and mopping up the crumbs in a ham omelet this morning) maybe shouldn't have been the plan.

More catching up...

18 July: 30 minutes to work; 28 minutes home; 24 minutes to parents; 24 minutes getting back. Total for day 1 hour 46 minutes.

19 July: 29 minutes to work; 38 minutes to the Club after work; 20 minutes much later getting home. Total for the day 1 hour 27 minutes.

20 July: being short on sleep I got the bus to work. So that's 21 minutes walking to the bus stop (including some running when it overtook me!), and 6 minutes walking between bus routes on the way home so that I could get off at the stop by the house for a change. Then I managed to fall asleep instead of going ringing. [Hot and Hormonal] Total for the day 27 minutes.

Total this post is 3 hours 40 minutes, new running total 21 hours 55 minutes.

Not sure the race is working for me either - I'm not conscious of doing much more than usual - but it's encouraging to see how much of my normal routine counts as being physically active...

Not much to report today, beyond about 30 minutes hard labour (cleaning). I'd like to count the two hours' baking as well because it was exhausting, but it wasn't really aerobic exercise...

This brings my running total to 27 hours 6 minutes

I'm counting 30 minutes of the 2 hours plus wander down to the local nature reserve and pursuit of butterflies to take photos as aerobic. It was more energetic than it sounds, because I was wading through waist/head high grass and crawling around / getting up and down from squatting and variously moving around trying to get shots. Didn't do well with the butterflies, but did much better with crickets / grasshoppers.

I guess coughing doesn't count as aerobic?

20 mins walking home from work
60 mins walking dog with friends

Saturday, July 21st:
80 mins walking dog
15 mins cycling to and from shops
15 mins that I'm going to count of dancing at a festival (it was in small, low-impact doses but my legs really felt it in the morning)
30 mins walking dog

Sunday, July 22nd:[b]
30 mins walking dog
40 mins walking to church
30 mins activity while climbing in and out of windows, moving furniture and hoovering at a friend's house
90 mins walking dog before tea

[b]Monday, July 23rd:[b] (so far)
30 mins walking dog
20 mins walking to work

[b]Total to add: 460 minutes

Total so far: 2920 minutes or 48 hours and 40 minutes

Should have posted over the weekend to stay at the top of the leaderboard (although I'm very happy to take turn about with la vie en rouge). I am utterly amazed that I'm clocking up all this time - I am doing it fairly slowly and probably wouldn't be at the top if this was a test of aerobic capacity or proper endurance (or even if we were logging distance rather than time). There's only been one ceilidh in the mix so far, but I may get to an evening of social dancing at some point - better exercise but fewer minutes as you're rarely moving at all times in any given dance.

My spreadsheet suggests that I am managing just over two hours of activity a day. On weekdays that is simply a function of taking the dog for 90 minutes of walk and walking 40 minutes to and from work. On days when I trade off a dog walk with my flatmate it's usually so I can go and do something else that counts for minutes. Looks like I should be shooting for 60 hours total over this race.

I am now fairly certain that a dog will be a very good investment in my own fitness in the dim and distant future of retirement (or, I suppose, if I should find myself with a job I cannot walk or cycle to). I can skip dance classes or catch the bus to town if I'm feeling lazy, but the dog will need her walks. Of course, this motivation might be more powerful because she's not my dog, I'm much better with external motivating factors and accountability.

10 minutes walking to train station, so I could meet up with my friend in Charlbury.

18 July

About 1 hour walking to and around Ynys Gifftan.

19 July

10 minutes carrying wood, plasterboard and other supplies around.

1 hour building temporary scaffolding and breaking apart old plasterboard.

1 hour 30 mins mixing plaster.

20 July

30 minutes walking to and from climbing in the Llanberis Pass.

1 hour 30 minutes worth of exercise climbing at Carreg Wastad.

About 4 hours of DIY-related exercise, building a couple of barn doors.

22 July

About 1 hour 30 minutes worth of exercise trimming and hanging the doors.

Am on a soccer tour (watching not playing) and what happens on tour stays on tour. But I will say most of my exercise has come from walking around new cities, getting lost, the many stairs of the NYC subway system, and doing the bouncy - example here.

Days with little exercise are traveling days. I'll have slept in 7 beds in 2 weeks. Done on Thursday. [Smile] I'm getting too old for this stuff. [Biased]

You know how some people look forward to summer to get outside and do things?
Yeah. I'm at home in Oklahoma. It's 108º or hotter every day. You go outside and exercise, you die. Thus, I'm getting my butt kicked pretty badly in this here race. I mean, 20 minutes of moving furniture isn't all that much.
Going to be so glad to get back to where it's only 90-something and you can go outside after 8 PM.

Queries first:

harmony hope - yes you can count vigorous housework - I have been known to use the race as a way to kick my butt into spring cleaning

Liberty that time I made you under added and you're at 2510 minutes, 41 hours 40 minutes

Me, I'm declaring a pathetic 30 minutes of aerobic stuff - carrying a 5 litre pot of paint home for the next room, hopefully two rooms, to be dealt with, brisk walk to the supermarket and hauling bags home. The rest of the day was fairly constructive, but not particularly aerobic - the disadvantage of sunny weather is everyone is out, so walks anywhere are stop start as I meet people.

Preview post is my friend!

La vie en rouge, if you keep putting in two-hour-plus days this is going to get extremely tight! I have a craft project on a deadline in August to deal with as well as the fitness race but it is making me actually go places (like volunteering to go and get the shopping) when I might rather not. I may even do the hoovering again this week (my flatmate prefers to do it, otherwise she can't stand the noise).

In terms of minutes I'm almost wishing we were still going to be racing for the first couple of weeks in August. Once we give the dog back I'll be moving house and helping out at a dance festival so there would probably be plenty of opportunities to be active.

23 July: 28 minutes getting to work; 27 minutes getting home; and a trip to the allotment which gave me 20 minutes worth of actual exercise (including getting there and back). Total for the day 1 hour 15 minutes, since the housework in the evening was definitely not aerobic.

24 July: 30 minutes getting to work; 35 minutes getting home as the scenic (and cooler) route is now dry enough to use [Yipee] ; 10 min trekking to allotment and back to get veg. Total for today 1 hour 15 minutes, new running total 28 hours 7 minutes.

down with a bad case of the creepin' crud. actually think I may need to head to the doc soon. so things are spotty.

adding to my numbers from 7/21: did a huge amount of work around the house, so adding 45 minutes of general heavy lifting before work. I also danced a little after clocking out, but I can't remember how long and it wasn't much; a few songs.

7/22: I can't remember. I know I performed to a packed house, I know I went to see my friends play jazz afterwards and drank too damned much. but before my show? no idea. so we'll go with nil.

7/23: head cold re-emerged to make my life a living hell. unfortunately it showed up while on a shopping trip to the city, so the last half was evil. then I had to perform again. SO happy I didn't sneeze on stage but definitely performed with watery eyes and general misery. I'm giving myself 1 hour for all of the walking - was closer to 4 but with so much stopping and starting it really shouldn't all count.

today: I'm mizzable. still going to try at least some gentle yoga because my back muscles are bound up tight.

Harmony hope - it totally is, my house has never been so clean or tidy. Since I am decluttering, first bottom to top, then top to bottom I am working up the stair time.

The race has helped me to be more active, although tbh it would have been difficult to be less active than I have been for the last year.
A friend was talking about how beneficial she is finding her exercise regime for her mental health as well, and I realised that in the last, lazy year many of my daydreams have been about physical activity; horse riding, running lightly and speedily (rather than thumpily and slowly which is my current gait), swimming in clear cool water.
I think I was missing it without realising.....

However, back to the point!
20.7.12. 55 minutes Cycling to & from a meeting & walking to the pub
21.7.12. 40 minutes decluttering and housework.
22.7.12. 50 minutes waking for lovely lunch with not-yet in laws
23.7.12. 25minutes Cycle to &from work.
24.7.12. 85 minutes to and from work & gym and trainer.
Total this post 255 minutes or 4 hours 15minutes
Total 20 hours 29 minutes I think.

end of day addendum - walked to the lodge with the cast for drinks on a very sunny!!! deck and then walked back to the car - an additional 35 minutes. the drinks and accompanying food probably canceled it out, but the company was lovely. and the sun was dynamite! It's been a very grey summer.

I did move a filing cabinet and contents, two desks and contents and two bookshelves and contents, plus a whole lot of cleaning - two and half years of working 24/7 has not done much for the housework, this is a huge job. Still truckin'. Having suggested two-hour days would keep one in the running (or walking, very much a walking-based race for me this time out) I have managed to do more than two and a half hours on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week. I ended up giving an unexpected tour of the campus yesterday at lunchtime to some of our new students and staff members and the pleasant weather prompted us to consider more regular walking at lunchtime (sorry la vie en rouge!) both now and into the winter when we are in the office through all the hours of daylight.

I'm a bit disappointed to have very few dancing minutes in my total, but it's difficult to find time to take the dog out for an hour after work and also attend a night of social dancing from 7:30-10pm. I shall have to see what I can come up with over the weekend, but I suspect it will mostly be more walking. And possibly some cycling - there's likely to be some of that this evening to make up for trading off the dog walk this morning. The extra hour in bed was absolute bliss.

I wish I could claim more but a good chunk of time was spent being a lump in the sand.

Friday, July 27th (so far)
15 mins walking dog (excluding time spent trying to persuade two dogs that they should really carry about their own balls, not each other's)
30 mins walking to work the long way round to make up some minutes

Total to add: 125 minutes
Total so far: 3470 minutes or 57 hours and 50 minutes

Weather gave out last night after an early dog walk so I didn't put in any extra minutes even though I had planned to venture out for provisions. I sat on the sofa doing crochet instead which won't have counted as activity for the purposes of the race but did mean that I made some progress on the huge project that has a deadline in August on it.

Part of me wants to put in a big push this weekend and see how far I can blast through my 60-hour target (I have a 60-hour target, that's ridiculous) but I don't think many of the things I have to do are going to help me add minutes. Of course a totally weekend includes at least 180 minutes of dog walking and 35-40 minutes of walking to church so it wouldn't take much to manage 5 hours of activity over the two days. And there is gardening to be done.

Yesterday wasn't a good day for aerobic exercise, decluttering paperwork isn't that energetic. I can count hauling full recycling sacks of paper to the recycling bin and some of getting out for a wander via somewhere I thought I might get butterfly shots, but met various kids to chat to and then back to the supermarket. I've done what I could, but haven't kept very good track, so just count me out of the race. My primary sport is swimming and since i now teach swimming, I ahve difficulty getting in my own work-out. That, plus I have 2 other jobs and have been BUSY and a littel burnt-out. Then I got an ear infection....

I got ina good walk yesterday and a quick swim last week, and walking to and from one of my jobs, but... just not up to snuff.

Everyone else - well done! [Overused]

1hour 58 minutes Today. Big bike is out of action so much more walking. Also a swim.
I think this totals 22 hours 57 minutes. But I'm prepared to be corrected.

I'm home. I lost my phone, my voice, and (for a wee while) my wanderlust - my own bed feels good after 6 different hotels/hostels/cabins in the last 2 weeks. [Smile]

July 24 - 30mins
July 25 - 190mins
July 26 - 70mins
July 27 - 35mins

Total - 3005 mins (??????!)

Regular service of aerobics and swimming (and not doing the bouncy) will now be resumed. [Big Grin]

heavy duty house sorting/stuff-schlepping and yard work (cutting down trees and moving them, in this case) for a total of 3 hours and 15 minutes. yay me! I also walked to the coffee shop this morning but forgot to keep track. my back is killing me.

Liberty I make that 2835 minutes - a very good 47h 15m

I'm counting 2¼ hours walking yesterday - that's tube to where I was going, from tube three stops away at the other end and then walking home through the Forest - I'm getting fitter - the route home through the Forest is 5½ miles and I did it in under 2 hours - with a couple of 10 minute stops to take pictures, but I took them off (damselflies and hoverflies/butterflies). It's hilly there, it was considered as the bike route for the Olympics, but it's not hilly enough, no 300m drops. I'm also counting 20 minutes for the two tube walks.

Sorry now that I let real-life intrude so that I bailed out of this race. It has turned hilarious with hill-rolling, butterfly chasing and "doing the bouncy"!!! I have to admit I had to backtrack to Liberty's link for that, to discover with some relief that it didn't mean what I thought it might.

Anyway, well done all of you who have stuck, and keep on rolling, chasing, bouncing, biking and walking the dang dog!

Back from Dartington, and reporting progress:
Saturday 21 July: 60 m walking
Sunday: 30 m walking
Monday: 30 m walking, 1 h 20 m more walking, 40 m running
Tuesday: 30 m walking
Wednesday: 30 m walking
Thursday: 30 m walking, 1 h runnish
Friday: 30 m walking
Saturday: 30 m running

plus, at various times, more walking not fast enough to be even faintly aerobic. And, if singing counted, I would be close to winning this.

Anyway, total for post is 7 h 30 m.

Today: 64 minutes taking laps around the local lake. For some completely inscrutable reason, the usual crowd of walkers, joggers, kids, and slow cyclists was completely absent.

Sometimes the heat's okay.

okay, I'll count it! and it was, believe me. like wrestling with a panicky and smelly yeti.

so, for 7/28: dog bathing combined with yoga and calisthenics: 1 hour, 10 minutes. my push ups were pathetic today.

24 July, another 4 minutes getting to and from the chippy!

25 July: 28 minutes to work; 35 minutes getting home. Total of 1 hour 3 minutes.

26 July: 28 minutes to work; 36 minutes into town; 22 minutes getting home after giving blood; 7 minutes walking up to ringing; and 10 minutes walking back. No ringing, as with a brand new hole in my arm that would have been a Bad Thing™. Total of 1 hour 43 minutes.

27 July got a bit more energetic (briefly!). 28 minutes to work; 44 minutes to the library by using the canal route; 9 minutes getting home; 17 minutes to the Friday tower; about 2 minutes ringing up; 41 minutes ringing a quarter peal for the Olympics in the evening instead of at 8am [Big Grin] ; about 30 minutes of general ringing; 5 minutes over to see the parents; 20 minutes getting home again. Total of 3 hours 16 minutes.

28 July, the only walking I did was between carpark and pub, so a big fat zero for Saturday.

29 July: 10 minutes to church, 15 minutes ringing; 10 minutes back. That's 35 minutes so far today.

Total this post 6 hours 41 minutes, new running total 34 hours 48 minutes.

3 hours 20 minutes walking yesterday, all the way to Barbès to pick up some stuff for a sewing project. Got the bus back and took another detour on the way home for groceries.

Just 40 minutes walking today. I was planning to walk all the way home from church but it was raining.

Posted to here, declaring 60 minutes of the 2½ hours I spent out walking yesterday - too much waiting for the farmer to come near, then sprinting back again.

Today 7½ miles walk that took 2½ hours (well, nearer 3½ hours but I'm taking off an hour for photography) and 20 minutes rush to supermarket and back - total 2 hours 50 minutes

Friday, July 27th (cont)
40 mins walking home via the shop for teatime veggies
90 mins dog walking

Saturday, July 28th
20 mins cycling to and from supermarket
120 mins dog walking

Sunday, July 29th
30 mins walking dog
10 mins cycling to church
20 mins walking to lunch
30 mins cycling home
60 mins walking dog

Monday, July 30th (so far)
30 mins walking dog
20 mins walking to work

Total to add: 470 minutes or 7 hours and 50 minutes
Total so far: 3940 minutes or 65 hours and 40 minutes

That two-hour walk on Saturday was brutal. Off we went in our T-shirts and shorts in the sunshine. Half an hour in it started raining and didn't stop for another hour. We sheltered at a garden centre with scones and tea, it was our original destination and probably the only reason we didn't give up earlier on. Fortunately no-one seems to have come down with anything, probably because when we got home the dog was towelled off and left next to a radiator and the people went and had baths.

28th 54 minutes walking,
29th. 30 minutes, bit of cycling, bit of walking, it of running about on the beach (not as much as I hoped, and I would have swum, but there were kite surfers)
30th. 70 minutes walking. Took the very long route home from work.
Total this post 154 minutes or 2hours 34 minutes
So all in 25 hours 31 minutes
I'm really not sure about my adding up.

There are quite a few people to post times still. Can we ask the hosts to keep this open to the end of this week please, so people like Yangtze and Ultracrepidarian can add their times?

I rock!

yesterday, 7/29, was looking like a bit of a dud. I got called in to work at the bar after the play to cover for a few hours and figured I was skunked. but the band was GREAT. so when I clocked out at 10, I started dancing and kept going until 1 am. woot! so much fun. I need to have an excuse to dance everyday, I'd be half my current size.

anyway, taking into account the band's one break, I can log 2 hours, 40 minutes of good, heavy duty dancing. feels great!

Friday 27th 70 minutes cycling and I reckon I can probably count 5 minutes of the walking I did.

Saturday walked a fair bit - but all too leisurely to make the grade.

Sunday 28th went for a walk that would normally take me 35 minutes each way. Out was slower than normal with family and chatting, but I had to dash back to get the dinner on leaving the others to their own devices - so made it back in 25 minutes. I reckon 50 minutes is a reasonable claim.

running total 23hrs 45minutes with one day to go.

2 hours 15 minutes walking yesterday and 1 hour 10 minutes running (9 minutes miles* [Yipee] ) this morning.

Monday, July 30th (cont)
20 mins walking home in the rain
60 mins walking dog

Tuesday, July 31st (so far)
30 mins walking dog
20 mins walking to work

Total to add: 130 minutes or 2 hours and 10 minutes
Total so far: 4070 minutes or 67 hours and 50 minutes

Last day. Homeward stretch. Could be an odd one as I have a cinema trip planned so will have to squeeze walking the dog in around that. Might make me leave my desk at a reasonable time, I suppose. And the transport minutes will be a boost.

I think I'll let my flatmate deal with the morning dog walks for a few days once the race is over.

Golly, it appears that the last time I posted times was Sunday 8th - that's further back that even I thought.

My dodgy ankle which I turned again back in June has been really painful, so exercise has been limited to a bit of commuter walking and outrigger canoeing. Really should get more into swimming.

Have done these as weekly summaries to make life a bit easier for CK

w/b 9th July
140 mins commuter walking
80 mins outrigger canoeing

w/b 16th July
160 mins commuter walking plus
120 mins walking around all over Hackney for the One Hackney Parade, local farmers market, another local market and the Olympic Torch procession

w/b 23 July
210 mins walking up and down the beach plus
60 mins swimming and jumping around in the sea (in shorter bursts) plus
110 mins commuter walking plus
80 mins outrigger canoeing

Mon 30th July:
15 mins commuter walking

Tues 31 July
60 mins commuter walking

Phew. Sorry for not really entering the day by day racing this time around.

did my first tabata routine today - 4 minutes - heck no problem, right? but in 4 minutes the body was ROCKING so it led to a full upper body lifting routine and I was AWESOME! my arms are jello. so far today: 45 minutes with tabata+lifting and if I didn't have a show to put on I'd keep going.

TRY IT! the video I saw recommended tabata as a quick "wake up" routine in the morning and I'm going to give it a go for a week and see how I feel. I think I love it. and it's so easy. (well, as far as learning and doing. it's a lot of effort!) if anyone wants the rundown, let me know and I'll explain over in the AS thread. 4 minutes= less than a cigarette, a shower, a cuppa. totally doable. fit into one workout song.

and it's only 4 pm here so I may not be finished logging yet. watch this space.

Oh. Today is the end of the month. I, um, thought it was tomorrow. Well, I guess those Wednesday bike races are a day too late . . .
Put me down for 1 hour, 1 minute, and 11 seconds of bike riding, then. I did a few extra laps of the AA's Neighborhood Criterium today just to make up for any extra fudging I may have done over the month (and also to justify all the strange rounding I've done as well).

Tuesday, July 31st (cont)
10 mins of walking at lunchtime
25 mins walking home from work
10 mins cycling to the cinema
20 mins cycling home from the cinema
65 mins walking dog in a couple of stints either side of the cinema trip

Total to add: 130 minutes or 2 hours and 10 minutes
Total: 4200 minutes or 70 hours [Eek!]

Got up too late this morning for flatmate to even come on the morning dog walk and I can't even count it for race minutes. I shall have to put it down to being selfless and wonderful.

I will admit to working out my likely total yesterday afternoon, figuring out that I would be five minutes away from a 70 hour total (70 hours, how on earth have I done 70 hours of activity in July?) and deciding on that basis to tack a wee diversion onto my walk home. It is kind of good to discover that I can do that level of activity if it's fairly gentle and I have some sort of outside motivation to do it but the responsibility of having to walk the dog every morning and evening does rather eat into my time to do other things. I'm never going to beat this race total so I shall just enjoy it.

29 July, another 4 minutes going for a Chinese takeaway.

30 July; 30 minutes getting to work and 27 getting home, total of 57 minutes for the day.

31 July I had to drive so as to get home in time, so 2 minutes each way for getting between overflow carpark and work site, plus 1 minute running up a church path to get to a funeral (we were still slightly late [Frown] ). Total for the day 5 minutes.

Total this post is 1 hour 6 minutes. Final total for the month of 35 hours 54 minutes. Not too bad given I missed the first few days!

la vie en rouge, you were only an hour behind To the Pain 69 hours to her 70 hours. Ultracrepidarian had posted 45 hours 45 minutes to the morning of the 26th, so I'm expecting something in the high 50s if not higher.

Rosa Winkel - 55h 10m

CK you truly are a legend! Thank you once again for keeping all the maths straight, that's a really thankless task.

Like a number of folk I have lots of activity coming up that won't count for the race - next week I am moving house and helping out with a folk dance festival while the dog's family don't return until next weekend, so there could be all sorts of activity to log.

I guess I shall see everyone in January when I shall be back to my usual lazy self and struggling to fit in minnutes. Hopefully my performance in this race will remind me that I can find the time for exercise even on busy work days.

Thanks for the PM, CK. Sorry for keeping you up - I got a bit distracted and forgot about posting times here.

Here's the last week:

25 July

15 minutes cycling home, and then 10 minutes walking to the pub and back.

26 July

40 minutes cycling home to work to slacklining/climbing to home.

50 mintues of slacklining and about 1 hour 45 minutes worth of exercise at the climbing wall.

27 July

20 minutes morning run, and then 30 minutes commuter cycling during the day.

28 July

Climbing trip to the Roaches:

About 15 minutes of walking to get from the car to the crags and back again, and about 2 hours 45 minutes worth of climbing exercise while there.

29 July

1 hour cycling from home to church to home, and from home to train station to home.

30 July

10 minutes walking to get public transport to work (caught a bus because I was bringing a cake), and about 40 minutes walking to choir and home after work.

31 July

40 minutes cycling home to work to climbing to home, and about 1 hour 30 minutes worth of exercise at indoor climbing.

Phew. I think it was a pretty normal month in the end, rather than my originally expressed hope to do some 'extra' stuff for the fitness race, but still a busy and happy one. [Smile]

Thanks again, CK! It was good fun, and interesting to read about all the different things that people are getting up to. I'll be interested to see how January compares to July!

And my thanks too, CK.
We shall see what January brings ... (possibly a sense of panic at an impending half marathon)
