I have always held that one should not assign to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence, but the level of incompetence required is rapidly approaching a level as to present the same problem to the hypothesis as the amount of exotic matter required for the Alcubierre Warp Metric does to the prospect of FTL travel.

Another example of the banking system in this country fucking it up for everyone.

There's always greed, Karl. Stupidity plus greed covers a lot of ground. Sometimes greed is close to malice, but it is worth looking at that as a possible explanation for persistent SNAFU.

Very nice woman at my local branch here called me to tell me as soon as the transfer arrived so I was able to phone UK for another lengthy chat with British bank, at enormous sums per minute, and it should be sorted today... or tomorrow... or failing that on Monday!

Not really so bad, that is what happens if you purchase anything from outside the EU which is over the tax threshold. On most things you are expected to pay VAT and sometimes other import taxes on goods you import yourself (ie have them sent to you), the reasoning being that you'd have paid these taxes if you'd bought the item in the UK.
They don't have to open the package, normally they just work it out based on the declaration - what the goods is determines the tax code and the value determines the amount you owe. The handling fee is imposed by the Royal Mail, but is not so unreasonable given there are sometimes fees for delays imposed by the Revenue.
The only way around this would be to declare your items when you import them. The difference there is a) it'd very likely cost more than £14 and b) you'd have to pay it every time. When you have an item sent in the mail, there is about a 50% chance that it'll not be stopped by the Revenue.
The simple solution is not to buy things from overseas unless you're prepared to pay the tax on import. Nothing here to get mad about, this is just the system working as it is intended to.

I mean, what??
I saw charity site online (hungersite. click to give!) bought a few fair trade bits and pieces. Bought a recycled sari wrap skirt, for the benefit of women working their way out of poverty etc. Spent an amount I was, essentially, happy to donate, then postage costs on top.
Eventually I get a card saying I need to collect my parcel plus tax plus charges for not paying tax.
Tax I could just about cope with, but charges - a fine - for not paying them?? When was I asked to??
results - no more donations to overseas projects.
correction - i'll make a donation. I won't buy stuff.

When you imported something from outside of the EU. Them are the rules, whether you bought the items from a fairtrade outlet or anywhere else.
The charges are not a fine. A fine for avoiding import duties would be a lot more than that.

I don't think it is a fine, I think it is charges. Import duties for the tax, a handling charge of £9 per item goes to Royal Mail for handling it for you. I've handled this stuff, I'm pretty sure there is no fine involved.
from the Royal Mail website:
quote:
If you are receiving a package from overseas (unless it’s from another EU Country), please be aware that it may incur customs charges. Any package assessed by HM Revenue and customs as being liable for customs charges will also incur a Royal Mail handling fee of £8.
Any goods imported into the UK over the value of £18 are liable to import VAT. Please note that with effect from 1 November 2011 the £18 threshold will be reduced to £15. Gifts between private individuals over the value of £40 are also liable for VAT. Goods and gifts over these values may also be liable for customs duty. You no longer have to pay customs duty for goods up to the value of £135, however you will still be required to pay import VAT and excise duty where applicabl

Himself can't manage to get here much before noon, no matter if he closed the night before or not. One of these days I'm gonna need someone to bring me RC Cola and Moonpies in prison

TICTH digital television. It can be a bit erratic around sunset, but every time the temperature drops, I lose reception and tonight it's gone completely. Neither the booster nor the indoor aerial are making any difference.
I've just paid out a chunk of money to renew the TV licence, as well. And please don't suggest iPlayer, this isn't an option for bandwidth reasons.
We never had half so many problems with analogue television as we've had since the switchover to digital. Now I've got part-time reception and one of my family's got none at all.

So if someone wanted to open a credit card or, I don't know, a mortgage in my name, all they'd need to do would be to intercept this one letter. Sent in the ordinary (unsecure) mail.
I don't know if it is a breach of the Data Protection Act to be so willfully shite with other people's information, but it bloody well should be.

There are many different grammar checks, and each has its own on/off switch.
Also, I use the GB English dictionary(in browsers as well as Office) because the dictionary compliers haven't understood that "ise" endings predominate over "ize" in Australia.

TICTH my credit card company.
Last January when my old card expired, they issued a new one. That was fine. Then in March they changed my number and issued another new card. They have just done it again.
The only thing that I automatically charge to my credit card is my newspaper subscription. I have to tell them the new number over the phone because their internet site is not secure. Unfortunately, my hearing is very bad, and this type of phone conversation is an ordeal that takes a long time. I expect to go through this once every three years, but three times in one year is much too much.
Moreover, I am supposed to be able to activate the new card over the internet, but the site kept refusing my information. That's another phone call I have to make tomorrow.

Which unless, God forbid, you have a catastrophic illness, you won't do during the lifetime of the plan. Golly gee whiz, people; our American brothers and sisters want to move here because we are so very, very friendly, and here you go spoiling the dream by being anything but welcoming - please stop it!
Now, I think some of them might well change their minds when they see our high taxes, high prices for homes, cars, and all things retail, and the smaller selection of available clothing sizes in our malls.
Not to mention the herds of deer and moose crowding out cars on our highways; wolves, coyotes and rabid racoons roaming our urban areas; and ravenous mountain lions climbing onto condo balconies to chew through screen doors and chow down on sleeping residents.
But, as a friendly people, we truly need to welcome all Americans who might wish to come here, and I, for one, will say nothing that could discourage them.

TICTH Churchmanship. I am sick of it. All this endless petty meandering, wittering and pontificating about evangelicals, Catholics, liberals, post modern liberals, orthodox, atheists, Anglicans and whatever flavour is floating your boat this year. It absolutely makes me puke. Do you think there is one little part of God’s eternal kingdom where He gives a monkeys about what camp you want to belonging.
Can you not see that all you are doing is creating a boundary to keep you safe that does the exact opposite. You create these walls of Jericho not to worship God better or draw closer to Him but to create a safe little territory and a safe little God. You neuter Aslan, put a little collar around his neck with a bell on it and hope to Allah he never Roars.
I’m not saying that whatever you are is a bad thing (in my instance liberal Anglo-Catholic with charismatic leanings). I’m just saying that to pretend it is the ONLY thing, or pretend that it is enough, is a type of wilful spiritual blindness that speaks little of your or mine baptismal and conformational promises. We bleat on about loving the Lord our God yet we are little more than moths round aflame. Pretending that we are holy because we can see the light (whilst never letting it refine us) and that the candle we orbit with such ferocity is the only candle.
Your crushing desire to be right makes you wrong. It is not wrong to know what you like and worship God in a way that suits you psychologically, emotionally and spiritually but please can we stop pretending that just because what you do is good there is not more which could make your relationship with God better. I’m not asking you to give up what you are (in fact I’m asking you to celebrate more fully what you are in your community) but I am asking for a degree of willingness to grow and change, to know the limitations of where you find yourself, to stop criticising others who do it differently and to recognise that the kingdom is near and may actually be found not in doing what you have done for the last 20 years or in adhering to petty and unfulfilling labels.
In the end churchmanship, is in my opinion, barely helpful and in pretty much every instance I have ever come across wicked. It labels, categorises and stigmatises. A high tower to throw rocks from, screw that.

A redundancy pay off would be maybe a months salary per year worked, so it is roughly half that. Of course, I'd question the sense in paying him that much in the first place. But the payoff metric seems reasonable. Unless you want to suspend him on full pay and then go through a capability process that would take ages - etc etc.

Okay, four or five separate people have pulled this stunt on me in the past couple months, and so far I have been trying to apply Franciscan empathy and charity, but in order to do that, I have to get this out of my system:
It manifests itself in a number of ways-- sometimes it will be in the form of mean personal jokes ("don't be so sensitive!") Hypercritical remarks ("what, you can't take feedback?") or dismissal of any problems/ concerns I might have ("Who worries about petty shit like that? Grow up and deal and stop whining!")
Any attempt to set boundaries is me "being an unreasonable bitch" and any references to life issues that might be happening are "dodging the consequences" or evidence that if I only lived my life the way X did (insert prescriptive here) I wouldn't have such problems. I made my bed, I should lie in it, I deserve no pity or camaraderie or slack.
Then, after repeated such incidents, I get fed up and I snap, and say ENOUGH. Or someone X actually cares about having a rapport with says, "don't you think you're being harsh?" and the same damn thing happens every time.
"You have to understand I:
just heard a friend died
just broke up with my girlfriend.
have a doctor's appointment this afternoon and am afraid of what they will say."
At which point I guess I am supposed to say, "Oh it's OK, then. Even though I see you making an effort to be polite and civil to everyone else, I guess I should be honored that the fact that you use me as a punching bag affords you some release. In fact, thank you, give me some more."
Fuck that.
God didn't put me on this earth to be your scratching post when times are hard. When you use me that way, you make the choice to actively erode any sympathy and rapport you might have with me. If it happens consistently, I am going to work on the premise that my sympathy and rapport is not something you need-- and you don't get it.Simple as that. There's something I wrote up there about "sucking up consequences"-- right?
Anyway, TIC Those people TH. I deserve better. Next time try telling me what the issues are BEFORE you start scratching, and you might be surprised to find I have better uses than a scratching post.
And also (sad to say, I feel a strong need to do this) TICTH anybody who is about to send me a PM scolding me about my bad attitude. Guess what? Sometimes I have a bad attitude. That's true of anyone who carries human DNA. Deal.

And it freaks me out every time, especially since someone actually did accelerate out of a side road last week and clipped me before they stopped.
