Goodness, Santa's barely packed his sack away for another year and booked his summer holiday, but already Lent looms on the horizon and the Paschal Penguin is unruffling his feathers and waddling to the fore.

For those of you who are new to this, the Paschal Penguin is a friendly fellow who helps spread a little Easter-tide cheer between shipmates. If you wish to sign up to this year's exchange, you will need to send an email or PM to me, Smudgie, Penguin-keeper extraordinaire, detailing your postal address and any allergies or dislikes which might affect your delight at receiving a little surprise Easter gift. You might also mention whether financial/logistical contraints would affect where in the world you would be willing to send a gift to.

After a reasonable amount of signing-up time, I will gather together all the information and the penguin will randomly match the shipmates involved. Then I will contact you with the details of someone else who has signed up. Your task is to put together a little parcel of treats, to the maximum value of five UK pounds and send it (preferably anonymously, though this is a little tricky with customs labels, of course) to the person you've been allocated.

You should aim for your parcel to arrive on their doorstep around Easter, but definitely by Pentecost at the very very latest.

Your details will, in turn, be passed to a similarly kind and generous shipmate who will organise a surprise parcel to come winging its way to you, hopefully also by Pentecost at the very very latest!

So, let the fun begin!

The last time I participated (several years ago), I just used "Paschal Penguin" as my return address and on the customs forms. The person at the Post Office probably thought it was a Mexican name or something!

Yeah! I am in too. Please. Just the thing to cheer us all up in the post Christmas doldrums.

I send my gifts from Paschal Penguin too, or my initials, depending on my mood. I add my post code and my friendly neighbourhood Post master has never commented. He has raised his eye-brows, but never said a word!

The one time I got raised eyebrows from my mail carrier was when a Secret Santa gift came addressed to "Pigwidgeon." If he asked, I was going to say that was my dog's name.

Gatecrashing the PP thread with a big thank you to my second santa who sent me a lovely notebook, bookmark and chocolate which arrived yesterday.

And, using the thread for its intended purpose, I would like to sign up for PP please - I'll be happy to settle for just one gift like the rest of you [Big Grin]

My secret santa came! I'm sooo happy I'm off to PM her right now to say thank you! To my joy it contained hot chocolate, two decorations which are now hung on the bouquets for the wedding, chocolate and orange tea, snow and all wrapped up in some awesome material!

I'm now mentally bouncing about the room!

So, Pigwidgeon, are you going to play?

And who else would like to join us? It's a lovely bit of Easter fun.

With Easter on 31st March, I'll keep this open until 24th February, then try and get the matching done that following week so that you have a month to get those gifts and pop them in the post. So if you know someone who normally likes to play along, or a newcomer who might like to share a bit of Easter joy with a fellow shipmate (and get a surprise parcel in return!), then give them an elbow in the ribs now! [Big Grin]

We visitd a rtaher nice supermarket today, so I have, potentially, bought mt Paschal Penguin gifts. All I now hope is that a) they tie in with my recipient's likes and dislikes and b) that I can keep them out of reach of the cat.

As Darllenwr is diabetic, he's got to be a bit more careful than the cat - also, he knows that the goodies are to be consigned to a passing penguin. (He'll get some goodies of his own on Easter Sunday) Actually, it's the wrappings that the cat is after - any paper or cardboard boxes left lying around get bitten and chewed by a certain small cat. We do feed the cat, honest!

Posted by The Weeder (# 11321) on :

I am sure you do feed your cat, St.G. But as all cat lovers know, they prefer the inedible. An Abby who once lived with us made a valient attempt at a hot water bottle. We were amazed at he much he managed to eat. He did not manage to digest any of it. That was how we knew who had eaten it, and let the others off the hook.

CK, you two have been added to my database but I just thought I would wait for anyone else before I posted the final list. Final list we now have, however. I shall do the matching tonight and start distributing information through the remainder of the week. Watch those inboxes (and make sure they have space!)

Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on :

The penguin's been busy playing with an online random name picker and is now sitting looking very pleased with himself as his secretary devotes her evening to sending out the results of his matchings. Hopefully everybody has a PM in their inbox this evening - I hope you're all happy with who you've got.

(If you really are unhappy - for example you've sent that person a present three years running already - then let me know a.s.a.p)

A reminder, with the exception of one person who's been given a specific deadline, can you all aim to get your gifts into the post so that they have time to arrive before Easter? And the spending limit is the equivalent of five pounds sterling. If there is any problem with sending your gift, then the sooner I know, the better.

Right, get organised, get choosing, get sending, and start watching the post [Big Grin]

If I'd thought, I could have asked him to sign my Penguinee's parcel, which might have added an extra interest. (On the other hand my penguinee might have thought "Who?")

Thank you, Elaine C! The penguin popped by today, looking quite at home amidst the snow. My daughter was at home today, as her school bus isn't running, so we opened it together.

We were both delighted by the beautifully crafted tin and card. The chocolates will be saved till Easter.

You are very talented! I love that the tin is personalised with my initial. Many, many thanks!!

The parcel has been entrusted to the sacks of La Poste but it is going by the slowest method (and the cheapest!) possible. I hope it will get to its destination before Easter...but it may be a little late. Apologies to the Sendee if they are on tenterhooks!

The penguin arrived today with a very exciting parcel. Housemate ran downstairs and called up "it's for you. From New Mexico" At which point I named the shipmate and I was glad to see I was right [Big Grin]

I sent the penguin on it's way with an exciting parcel of it's own!

Posted by Cottontail (# 12234) on :

Aha! I too have a parcel from New Mexico! Could it be that the fates have thrown us together again, JB and Motherboard?? I think that is the third gift I have received from you both - and I sent one to New Mexico a couple of years back too! It's like having two very lovely Santa-Penguin penpals.
[Angel]

I shall save the gift for opening on Easter Day, and shall post my proper thanks then. Until then, much excitement.

In other news, the Penguin has left Scottish shores and is paddling its way over the sea. She assures me she can get there for Easter Day, so here's hoping the stormy weather does not delay her.

Yesterday, I found an envelope with Her Majesty's portrait in the corner. Yup, the penguin comith, bearing chocolate, a Lewis chessman pencil,* monk-made hand cream, and a note that gave me some amusement—knowing that my sender tried to explain the concept of bronies to someone, anyone, else is, well . . .

Thank you muchly! I should be sending mine soon, once I make a visit or two of my own.

I came home from work to discover a parcel from a Scottish Penguin. On opening the parcel, I discovered a card planted by the Easter Bunny claiming all the credit for exciting fabric and tasty looking eggs. Surely eggs are more likely to come from a Penguin anyway?

An exhausted Penguin landed on our doormat, having swum all the way from America. It brought a lovely pussycat purse with a prayer card, and an amazing stand up card of Grace Cathedral, Chicago. The penguin must have thought it had taken a wrong turning and arrived home, looking at all the snow! Many thanks to the kind shipmate who gave the package to the poor penguin.

Better late than never.
At some stage someone in Oxon UK will get an Australian-related Easter chocolate. Here in Oz, the famous bilby is endagered.... So, at Easter we think of small, cute, furry animals that are not bunnies.
Like this!

Incidentally, Australians cannot send unidentified mail. The sender must clearly attach name and address etc. Not much anonymity there. Sorry

Just a friendly reminder and reassurance combined. I've had a few people PMing me to say they've not managed to post their parcel yet. Fear not. We only aim for Easter, it's not an expectation. As long as it arrives before Pentecost, it's not a big problem and everyone who participates can enjoy the suspense. [Biased] Having said that, please DO try to get the parcel posted as soon as you can and if there's a real problem, let me know.

Meanwhile, the Paschal Penguin and I would like to wish EVERYONE on the thread a blessed (and chocolate-filled) Easter. [Big Grin]

Opened my parcel as part of an abridged breakfast before ringing. I have been a good girl, and kept my gifts until The Day. Two of my favourite Green and Blacks - Maya Gold (small pieces will be taken with strong coffee - elegant) and Milk (whole lot likely to be devoured watching TV in bed tonight - disgusting). Also for the sweet little measuring tape which is ideal for my sewing box. Granddaughter wants to eat it as she's convinced it's actually a new species of jammy dodger! [Big Grin]

Thank you, Paschal Penguin! My packet arrived today, containing a little knitted duckie (or chicken?) which is being eyed jealously by Bib-the-Kitten, two fluffy chicks (one of which has been already carried away by Bib-the-Kitten) a pottery penguin (who will join the Portuguese chicken blu-tacked to my computer stand) and a bag of Fair Trade chocolate beans (which, as today is a Fast day on the 5:2 diet, have been hidden away so they don't tempt me quite so much!) There was also a lovely postcard of pictures of the landscape through which the Penguin had to struggle in order to deliver. I'm sure I could work out who my Sender was,but I prefer him/her to be an International Penguin of Mystery! Thank you though, whoever you are!

As I have an almost non-stop teaching day (just a 45 minute break now) it was a lovely pleasure when MrD plonked my parcel on the desk in front of me. I had to hurry my student along so I could put the phone down and open my packet! Thank you very much.

Woo hoo! I came home today to a lovely little box of Easter candies all the way from Oxford! Some fair trade "jelly teddies" (what we in the US call "gummi bears"), two bars of Divine chocolate (the BEST!), and my very favorite Easter treat - a Cadbury Creme Egg! In the non-edible department, there was a crocheted hen cover over the Creme Egg, a couple tiny, fuzzy, colorful chicks, and a little PENGUIN!

I love it very much - thank you, Paschal Penguin! I need to see if anything there is a hint as to who you are... I like to try to figure it out.

ETA: The jelly teddies are all gone now. [Big Grin]

Waylaid a passing Penguin and entrusted a package to it this afternoon, sending it in a Westerly direction. Hopefully it will arrive by Pentecost...

Finally, the cousin of the PP delivered me a parcel, muttering about being redirected and engineering works in the lower stratosphere.
[Yipee]
Chocolate
[Yipee]
White chocolate
[Yipee]
and more goodies.
Q. thanks you

No word from my recipient, although it should have arrived a week ago. Maybe I should send another? Hard to find Easter candy anymore but chocolate is always on hand.

Thank you Paschal Penguin! My penguin did arrive before Easter, but had to sit for a week at the sorting office before could pick it up.

My penguin sent me some lovely mango Body Shop body butter and lip balm - a rea treat! The body butter smells gorgeous and the lip balm is helping my poor lips recover from the ravages of a Yorkshire winter.

Thanks PP, it's a lovely gift. [Big Grin]

I came home to find a mysterious package tucked inside my screen door, with a stamp from Her Majesty's Royal Mail. The return address looked suspiciously familiar. As it happens, my Pascal Penguin was my Santee from last Christmas!

I loved the colo[u]rful postcards of Glasgow, (the one in Scotland, not the one in Virginia) with a book of Scottish recipes, plus a bonus recipe for CAT! My favo[u]rite! [Two face]

Best of all was a cloth with instructions on how to understand Glaswegian, and a bar of Strathaven Tablet. Ya dancer!

A tired penguin passed this way today and dropped of a parcel containing jelly beans and a very handy shopping bag in its own purse.

Thank you very much Paschal Penguin.

Thank you.

To my penguin from Oz, many many thanks for the chocolate Bilby and assorted fudges. They will be savoured long and slow... Incidentally, they were packed in a cylindrical bottle container which wouldn't go through my letter box, so the postman, obviously disinclined to take them back to the sorting office, pushed it through the cat flap.

Poor disappointed moggies [Waterworks]

But happy me. [Big Grin]

Just on information, if you think you might be my penguinee, or just hope you are, um...I'm going to put things in the mail one day real soon now. Really. I mean it. So at least one of you shouldn't panic quite yet!

Gussie - your packet is in Surbiton, Carried by slow male. Should arrive at meet on Wednesday!

Mailman was puzzled, he didn't recognize the name attached to my address. I laughed and assured him it's my on-line identity.

Jelly beans with real fruit flavor! What a treat. And a truely lovely card and window decal. Happy Easter!

Thank you, not so secret Paschal Penguin for the lovely shawl and statue of Ganesha. The shawl is awaiting a suitable occasion to wear it, and Ganesha is sitting on my mantlepiece keeping my collection of pottery pigs entertained.

With thanks to my totally anonymous UK penguin for chocolate and mat.

Some of the chocolate was enjoyed by those who were fortunate to be at the Surbiton Shipmeet,

Um. I should note that I did get my lovely prezzie package weeks ago. My penguin is much more efficient than me. [Hot and Hormonal]

But my present sent out did make it. Luckily liturgical Easter lasts quite a while!

Post-Paschal penguin package posted pre-Pentecost!

Ditto, with expected timely arrival for Trinity - though, my Paschal Penguin also seems to be having difficulties navigating its way half-way round the world - but never fear!

Well, the good news is that the Penguin Has Landed!

The less good news is that the really lovely pottery bowl arrived in pieces! We will try to jig saw it together with super glue.

There was also some wonderful deep dark chocolate, flavoured with with sea salt and crushed organic coffee beans. It tastes wonderful! We will ration ourselves to make it last. Who said American chocolate is not as good as Euopean choccolate? This stuff is wonderful!

An added bonus was that the bowl was wrapped in The Washington Post. Yes, I know it did not actually protect the bowl from damage, but we love seeing newspapers from other English speaking countries, and are looking forward to reading it.

Has anyone who at last post was 'still awaiting with eager anticipation' a penguin waddling by had a present laid at their door. I haven't seen the recipient of mine saying that theirs had arrived (late, unfortunately) - so just wondering ...

Bump.

Smudgie, please contact me.

OK, we're nearly there.

I am so sorry for the delay - due to me suddenly after Easter finding myself in a new job which actually had me (much to my surprise and not particular pleasure) working fifteen hours a day! Only five weeks to go with that.

I make it that there are only three more packages to arrive and I am aware of the circumstances with two of these. The recipients still waiting are...

Rowen
Emendator Liturgia
and
Smudgie

(Sophs, the Smudgelet was keen to contact you himself to thank you for his amazing parcel - he is always my standby to allow some leeway for any last minute additions to the sender list)

I know about two of these so hopefully they will be arriving soon.

For the rest, it looks as though there've been some delightful and thoughful packages sent, as always. [Big Grin]

Hey, Smudgie, you started a Generousity Movement here. We two Aussies felt sorry for each other and are in the process of sending each other gifts, major floods permitting.
We figured if we eventually get others ones, well and good, but we wanted to be Very Nice to each other. It feels good to be Very Nice!
