On behalf of the All Saints' hosts and the rest of the Ship, we welcome you aboard! This is the place to make your presence known, so that we may offer our greetings and advice to all our new members.

We ask that you make yourself familiar with our version of the "10 Commandments", which are the basic guidelines that you agreed to follow when you registered. You may also want to check the FAQ's for more useful information.

Remember, each area of the Ship has its own rules and regulations, which you will find hyperlinked at the top of each board. They range from Heaven to Hell (literally!), and you'll want to familiarize yourself with them, especially here at the beginning of your "tour of duty".

Once again, welcome to the Ship. We wish you smooth sailing!

Very long-time lurker, finally plucked up courage to register. Won't be saying much (not my style), but I have learned so much from the Ship over the years that I think I might be able to make the odd contribution.

Hi everyone! I am a student who is about to graduate soon.

My Christian identity is deceptive. Externally, I belong to a conservative Evangelical (leaning on Fundamentalism) Baptist church. Don't really like what they teach but still putting up with it. Deep down, I identify with what "old time Protestantism" stand for - that is, the Evangelical doctrines (e.g. sola fide), and the importance of the Sacraments in Christian faith/living. I am therefore seriously considering a switch to confessional Lutheranism.

P.S. I just realized I put my first thread discussing the Anglican Church in the wrong section. Could any moderator help me move it to the right forum? Thank you!

Hi liberte, I have moved your thread about Anglicanism to the Ecclesiantics board, where it is more likely to get a response.

Hey everyone!

I've been lurking here for a whiles and finally decide to make an account. I'm a 24 year old math teacher living in NYC. Raised Roman Catholic, but an atheist since I was 13. I tend toward new atheism but have a strange fascination with traditional Catholicism, and Anglo-Catholicism in particular. Im probably just as likely to frequent Ecclesiantics as I am to be an atheist contrarian elsewhere. Nice to meet you all.

Hi! I stumbled on this Forum the other day whilst googling a question about changes in the direction of British churches compared to the 1980s, when as a young man I worshipped at a wide range of churches in a few years.

The range of topics being discussed intrigued me, so it seemed logical to join.

Prior to the 1980s I'd spent times in and out of church, but realised the impossibility of theological fence-sitting when practical decisions need to be made, and made a deeper commitment. Since then I've been unadventurous, and remained in a mainstream church with good Bible-based teaching.

Hopefully it'll be interesting to hear a wider range of views here on a range of topics.

Anyway I have been dragged in to posting from occasional lurking, by a discussion of Doctors past here from my childhood. Which gives you an idea of where and when I come from.
I am a longstanding non-conformist hoping to understand a bit more about what I have grown up with, without understanding totally. And hoping to remedy that (if possible here).

It seems to have worked just fine, Longshanks! I find that familiarity with the Doctor helps considerably in the conversations around these parts:

Whoops!
I've already commented on one of the boards as I hadn't yet found this thread...here's part of what I posted by way of introduction:
"Firstly my context so you know what’s formed me: I was brought up as a Roman Catholic and am now an Eucharistic Anglican and during all the many intervening years have worshipped at almost every possible other type of church both in the UK and abroad. My husband and I are currently working with the Anglican Church in Kenya in a Justice and Peace initiative."
My internet connection here is somewhat dodgy but for all that I love this Ship so will try to visit as often as I can.

A year ago, I became profoundly mentally ill after spending ten years caring for a partner with bipolar disorder and doing a job I had come to dislike.

Now I'm on the mend and working part-time for a much smaller company in a more rewarding role. My personal life may still resemble something that has been hit by a car, but my interest in God and desire to know more seems to have survived my illness.

Hello!

I've taken the plunge and registered after a few weeks of lurking.

I am quite a tenuous convert to Christianity and am still finding my feet, I've gone from being bought up in an atheistic (practically Marxist) household through 'New Atheism', agnosticism and Quakerism to find myself at the door of my local CoE parish church.

I've been attending for a few months, reading about, getting a feel for the Bible and a few other texts, enjoying it a great deal, giving a lot of thought to how I stand and looking toward baptism. (Are there any places I'm not allowed if I'm not yet baptised, a virtual communion table perhaps?)

Outside of religious matters I'm an office bod at a life insurance company, I am a big fan of architecture (especially churches and cathedrals), classical music, literature and travel.

So yes, I've read the FAQ and 10C, I'm just another Anglican to add to the pile and mumble along to an organ-based renditionof 'Shine Jesus, Shine'.

'Blaze, spirit, blaze'

Sounds like you and I have been on vaguely similar journeys. The fruit of my time with the Quakers was that, although I met some very good people, I felt I lacked direction and certainly needed someone to tell me more about the Bible. The result is that I'm involved with a small church in London that meets each Sunday to discuss parts of the Bible. And right now, it feels like a good place to be.

Posted by Welease Woderwick (# 10424) on :

Hi norfolkadam and welcome; and apologies to DouglasTheOtter for my typo when greeting him earlier [Hot and Hormonal]

I moved from Anglicanism to Quakerism mumble-mumble years ago but now, perforce, worship mainly in either Latin Catholic or Syro-Malabar Catholic churches - the nearest Quakers are a couple of days train ride away!

Wishing you every blessing for both your journey of faith and your little cruise with us on board this weird Ship.

So, I grew up with absolutely no idea coming from my family en situ; they had no interest in education. I grew up in a wholesale dry cleaners, and in school besides academic subjects I took tailoring.

But I spent after-school from age 9-11 at the local Library reading the biographies of the Tudors and the Stuarts.

I married (and divorced) three Anglo men (that my mother liked). They were the safe and conventional sort that she approved of. I found them ultimately very narrow.

I never did grow up; I've done all sorts of different kinds of work, publishing, editing, business machine repair, nine years of college. I have a dozen books listed at Amazon.com.

what am I going to be when I grow up? Uhm, let's see. Either I'll never grow up at all, just be retired and do research that interests me (and I did put in 45 years of paid labor and contributed to Social Security), or maybe I'll just take up art again after a long time away from it.

I'm enjoying studying solar astronomy right now, and discovering surprising new facts... I never heard spoken til now.

Grow up? All my children did that, and they went on and had kids of their own, a few of whom also grew up. But growing up sounds so terminal.

:giggle: I'm going to stay a kid as long as I can.

I thought my name is Pinocchia around here. Oh well; I must have placed the wrong name on the wrong line.

Nice to have a chance to chat with you Friends.

Hello everyone,

I'm a long, long time lurker.

My journey has taken me through being a pastor's kid, attending Baptist, charismatic CoE and charismatic churches. I have worked in various capacities in churches, but have taken a step back over the last year or so. I am currently wrestling with a number of questions, and find myself hungry for proof for answers that were taken as givens in the past. I don't know if this is a start of a journey away from faith for me, or into deeper faith. I just want to be sure of what I believe after inheriting beliefs and continuing on while making sure I don't offend anyone.

In real life I work in IT and play lots of music.

Thank you for making me welcome.

Evensong, you're dead accurate about that being a baptism by fire!

All seven of you are very welcome but Hell isn't for the fainthearted, sensitive or those of a nervous disposition. Gratuitous insults are pretty much the order of the day, so please, before posting in Hell have a good look at what's there already, read the Ship's Ten Commandments and the Hell board guidelines, noting particularly how these modify the 10C's.

Oh, and the Hosts take a perverse pleasure in doing their job in a Hellish fashion, just to maintain the feel of the place.

I've been on-line since 1984 when I started college and I worked on a 40-pound "portable" computer called an Osborne, which ran CPM, and the "screen" was about 3 inches by four inches, to see the work. I typed all my college papers on that puppy.

I don't usually participate in Forums because my usual GAFF is that I take conversations too far out of bounds for the comfort of most members. So, if I do that here, please remind me to "stay on topic," okay?

Get me going on an arcane topic, and I lose my sense of navigating.

Yes, Pinocchia was the desired screen-name. See?

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, but just registered today.

About me: I'm an American (from NY area) living in London for the past few years. I was raised in a Reformation Movement (Stone-Campbell cranked up to warp speed) church that, umm, wasn't for me. From leaving home for college until last year I rarely stepped foot in a church. Last summer I started to get an urge to reconnect to God and ended up at my local CofE parish(charismatic/evangelical). Now a new Christian and trying my best to learn as much as possible.

Hi all,I'm a 30-something Irish guy, have been visiting the site for quite some time and finally got around to joining up.After a mostly positive Catholic upbringing, I drifter away from the church for reasons which are too predictable to go into here - although I still hold a great deal about Catholicism in the highest regard. I never made the same leap to non-belief as many of my friends though, there's something about that Jesus guy that has a hold on me! Have been feeling drawn towards attending a Quaker meeting recently, but I haven't quite worked up the courage to do so yet.

Looking forward to taking part and learning a lot from everyone here!

I'm also a relative newbie and I'd like to thank the admins for setting this place up and keeping it going.

In a former incarnation, I posted on another talkboard up to having a breakdown and part of the recovery from that seems to have involved people on that board suddenly finding me insufferable. As to why, I don't know, but I had the distinct impression that people were arguing with the poster and not the post.

So I'll see it goes here and I'm sure that the shipmates will tell me if they think I'm being a pain...

Welcome DouglasTheOtter (and others)

One of our features that often leads to newcomers asking "I thought this was a Christian website?" is our Hell board.

That is the only place where attacks on the poster, rather than the contents of the post, are permitted. If anyone does so elsewhere then the hosts of that board will correct them. If they carry on, it goes up to the Admins for further action. Whatever is done should always be done clearly.

The effect of this is that all the other boards ought to be pretty safe places for you, so long as you follow the guidelines and our Ten Commandments (which differ from the originals somewhat). Hell OTOH, will probably live up to its name.

My username basically came from how annoying it is when people make assumptions based on a few musings i.e. whatever I write/say is not a complete picture of who I am but part of something more complex. & it's a reminder that I need to view others' posts in the same way.
I am naturally a pretty open and honest person so I think my username sometimes confuses people. But it's my interest in having a true reflection of things that originally prompted me to use the name elsewhere on the internet back when I was an angst-ridden teenager. I even once got a comment posted on Mega-zine on Teletext under the name!

Hi there,

I registered on the Ship many moons ago, but my hopes of active participation on this esteemed vessel were swiftly dashed by the deadly cocktail of the discernment process in the Church of England, full-time studies at university and a job. In the end, the mix relentlessly ate up every single spare moment I had and all I could do was lurk.

I have always appreciated the quality of the discussion here (can be quite intimidating at times!). In fact, merely lurking on the Ship helped me process my own thoughts on a vast array of issues as I journeyed through the discernment process, with all its joys and sorrows.

Now that I am preparing to become raw material for one of the vicar factories in September, I would love to be able to join these boards "properly".

I am another long-time lurker who recently decided to come out of hiding and join the fun. I was a little surprised to find heated discussions in progress about inheritance tax and client complaints about professionals - I did wonder the was some cyber mix-up with the Trusts Discussion Forum!

Theologically I tend towards the liberal / agnostic end of the Anglican spectrum but liturgically I am a high church traditionalist. And I am a bit of a train-spotter when it comes to hymns, as my log-in name might suggest!

What does TICTH stand for?

There are threads in both Heaven and Hell, yet neither seems to have an explanation for what it stands for. I can also find no references to it in wider searches (by which, I mean, 2 minutes each on Urban Dictionary, the Acronym Finder and Google).

Is it part of some long-running in-joke?

Posted by Firenze (# 619) on :

Today I Consign To Heaven (or Hell).

A hardy perennial. Originally the phrase was spelt out in full, but after many iterations, it's been shortened.

The threads are, untypically, not intended for discussion, but just as a place to post either something Really Nice or vent at some annoyance/idiocy/injustice.

Struggling Anglican, high church worship preferences combined with liberal inclinations; trying to feel at home, and finding it near-impossible (in this, as in other matters).

Hello [Smile]

Newbie here, after lurking for a few weeks. I'm homegrown CofE-type person who discovered one day that what was going on might be of some sort of significance. I am still recovering. I'm not very good or happy with theological labels, but at a push I might attach to my person such words as "liberal" or "progressive" or (on the right day, in the right company) "Christian". On very rare occasions I might even be orthodox, if no one is looking...

Peace of Christ to all hearts on this board...

I have been to the Ship a few times in the last 3 years since converting to Christianity from cradle-atheism. It has never captured my attention too much, but in the last few days I was browsing "Glory", and saw the tenderhearted warmth for the dearly beloved departed. It immediately got me to join... now I am just a young recruit aboard this crazy (Fellow-)Ship. [Smile]

No let me correct that, whether someone is saved is God's business not mine! There that is the strict Calvinist stance.
