I hope this is the right place to post this. A dear friend of ours is being ordained as Deacon at the end of the month, and we are looking for a suitable verse of scripture ( or similar) to inspire him in his ministry. Have my venerable shipmates any suggestions?

The first thing that comes to mind is not directly from scripture, but from the (Roman Catholic) ordinal for deacons, said by the bishop as he hands the newly ordained books of gospels:

quote:

“receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ whose heralds you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe and practice what you teach.”

The second thing that came to mind was from 1 Tim 3:8a, 9

quote:

Deacons likewise must be honorable... holding to the mystery of faith with a clear conscience.

I preached a whole homily at some point, early in my diaconate, about what it means to cling to a mystery.

From the Anglican tradition, a few passages that are traditionally used during the ordination of a deacon are:

Jeremiah 1:4-9
Psalm 84
Psalm 119:33-40
2 Corinthians 4:1-6
1 Timothy 3:8-13
Acts 6:2-7
Luke 12:35-38
Luke 22:24-27

Also,
Ecclesiasticus 39:1-8

The full order of service can be found in the Book of Common Prayer, pp. 537-47.

Sorry for the double post. I was too late to add that my friend is a married man being ordained to the Roman Catholic Permanent Diaconate, a burning desire of his which he is now able to fulfil after 33 years in the medical profession - though I'm not sure this additional information affects the choice of inspirational inscription in his commemorative gift!

The opening post sounds like a search for a motto. How about this:

Always useful, especially at committee meetings and at meetings with the bishop.

Something from St Francis, a deacon e.g.
We must not be wise and prudent according to the flesh. Rather, we must be simple, humble, pure. We should never desire to be over others. Instead, we ought to be servants who are submissive to every human being for God’s sake. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on all who live in this way and persevere in it to the end. He will permanently dwell in them. They will be the Father’s children who do his work. They are the spouses, brothers and mothers of our Lord Jesus Christ.
