At the London meet last night, a few of us were of the opinion that we should set aside an evening specifically to celebrate Gambit's life. This would have to be in the new year and, obviously, the venue would have to pass the "Gambit test". The priorities are

The Sanctuary in Tothill Street fits the bill perfectly.

I know that there's already a meet planned for 21st Jan. Do we want to combine that one with a memorial, or would people like to set aside a separate evening for a night of drinking and debauchery?

I would love to try and make this meet, even though it will mean going to London for the first time in 13 years.

And as far as I know, the 21st would be fine for me.

21st would be fantastic for me, as I will have just finished my exams. I'll be there.

What about having one after the funeral when we get the date?

Posted by Moth (# 2589) on :

I don't have any objections to the date, nor yet to the Sanctuary - a fine pub, so ShadoK says, and he should know as he keeps ending up in there after work! However, I kind of wanted to go to the place Gambit found for the Cusanus meet. It was the last post of Gambit's that I read before I heard the sad news.

Still, I'll abide by the wishes of the majority.

Posted by Wairua (# 3912) on :

I had already got the 21st meet in the diary and would like to make the memorial meet so it works well to combine them on the 21st. I agree with Moth that as Gambit had already suggested a place to meet with Cusanus that is another option.

Posted by Emma. (# 3571) on :

(id quite like to go to the funeral - and would appreciate meeting up with shipmeets for a pint after that daisymay if thats what you were thinking?)

I start a new teaching job in jan and so cant make that date - but *do* go for it!

21st is already in my diary (of course. I'm happy ot leave the location ot the locals.

I'm game. Not too fussed about the location, as long as it's going to have room for us all!

Like Emma and Daisymay, I would like to attend the funeral and any meet that happens afterwards. But I might also be able to make 21st Jan - I'll have to consult the fire-breathing one!

I would like to make a collection of photographs of James, as I don't have many. If anyone has any-taken at Shipmeets or anything-I'd love it if you could post them, not just for me but so they're here if anyone else would like to see them.
[Note: it was suggested that this request be posted here as people might be sharing print photos at the meet as well. Feel free to PM eyeliner if you want to help.]

Might be worth looking at 'shipmeet photos' threads.

Excactly what I was about to say. I'm sure there's one there somewhere of him doing his famous "fist in mouth" trick, which not only makes a good pic, but is also a pretty impressive thing to be able to do.

It's things like the fist in the mouth and the trademark cowboy boots that we want to remember on the memorial meet. It seems that the general consensus is that it should be on the 21st. The Queens Arms would be OK, but, as The Man Himself said, it's a bit off the beaten track. As this is a meet that may well attract a fair number of non-Londoners, I still reckon The Sanctuary is as good a place as any. (They do accommodation there too for people too pissed to get home)

I can do that too, you know. It's just that I tend not to, what with it all being unladylike and stuff. I remember I told him once, and he was so disbeleving that he said that if I could prove it, he'd buy me a whole bottle of Bombay Sapphire, and some tonic, and a lemon to put in it.

He did as well. He was so shocked that I hadn't been bluffing that he had to...

I just deleted a post in which somebody speculated on the Real Life identity of another shipmate.

Don't do that.

If people want to reveal themselves, that's their call. If you really have a question about somebody's identity, handle it via PM with the individual in question only.

Difficult to say what time London meets start. Gambit would invariably be the first to arrive sometime in the early evening and we stat til we're chucked out.

Auntie D, The Sanctuary is on Tothill St (nearest Tube - St Jamess's Park [URL=http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=51.4996&lon=-0.1318&scale=10000&icon=x ]map here[/URL]). In order to get there from St James's Tube Station (Circle and District Lines):

1. Come out of the Main Entrance at St James's.
2. Cross the Broadway (you should see New Scotland Yard on your right).
3. Walk down Tothill St (towards Westminster Abbey) - you will pass a Pret a'Mange and an Eat.
4. Once you reach Eat, the Sanctuary pub should be just in front of you.

Total duration of journey (shorter than it'd take to pour a pint of Guinness [Biased] ).

Victoria Station (mainline and Tube) and Westminster Tube (Circle, District and Jubilee Lines) are also within 10 minutes walking distance.

Hmm, a double post. Am I the first back home?

On my way there, I expected Gambit to be waiting as usual - a very odd experience.

A very good meet, with loads of shipmates and we took over the upper space. [Cool] And it was nice walking down to Victoria with a mini-crowd.

My bus was on the correct side of the Edgeware Road - there was some kind of Kurdish party (a wedding??) on the southward side, all over the road, dancing men in fancy, elegant wear, drums, singing, cars hooting in rythym, and all the traffic jammed and unable to move for miles. Fun to pass it by on the bus, and to dodge an ambulance whizzing down our side of the road as there was no way it could travel on the left. [Help]

Posted by The One and Only Nanny Ogg (# 1176) on :

It was a good meet with plenty of old faces and some new ones.

I was first there and managed to spread myself and belongings over 2 tables in anticipation of a crowd of shipmates (what is the collective term ?).

Gradually we managed to fill the tables, then the whole upper area, including some furniture rearrangement so people could move around and chat easily - but which made counting heads tricky (I think there were 27 of us at one stage).

Then again that should be 28 as a certain someone was there in spirit - if not in Fuller's ESB [Big Grin]

Don't try and type when you've had a quaffing session!

Sorry I vanished quite so precipitately, I needed to renew my acquaintance with the big friendly bottle of painkillers the nice doctor prescribed me, and also I wanted to be sure of getting home before chucking out time. (Even so, someone nearly sat on me on the bus)...

There will be photos. I don't know what they'll be like, taking pictures with one hand is a tricky business (especially when you keep confusing the "off" button and the "take the picture" button), and also I'm still trying to learn what my new camera does.

I'm finally awake again after getting home in the wee small hours of the morning. I must have had too much to drink because we stopped for kebabs on the journey home.

It was great to see so many people - sorry I didn't get around to speak to everyone. I figured if everyone moves around we all end up moving together, some people need to stay in one space and let the others move around them. I enjoyed catching up with those I knew and meeting a few new people. Hope to see you all again soon.

I thought the evening was a fitting tribute to Gambit.

Glad we made it. It was our first evening out together in London for about 2 1/2 years and it was lovely to meet lots of people face to face. Apologies to those we didn't get to chat to - there's always next time. Hope everyone got home safely.

A great meet. Good to put so many names to faces.

Indeed a great meet. I've still got the hangover [Waterworks] to prove what a great night it was. It was also good to see at least two friends I hadn't seen for a while.

At the suggestion of a couple of South London Shipmates a thread for a Croydon meet will be posted sometime in the near future [Cool] .

So everyone's being too polite to mention the unfortunate "eyeliner/tart" comment, are they?

Ah well, trust a Hellhost [Snigger] .

As was said before: a fitting tribute to James. It was good meeting so many new people as well, though it was quite worrying how many people said variations of "you don't look scary enough for a Hellhost" to me over the course of the evening. Note to self: work harder on appearance...

I think it was the accent...

It's hard to take a hell host seriously when they speak pure Brummie [Snigger]

Perhaps you should talk to Eyeliner about her eyeliner - very scary [Big Grin]

Photos here - click the Photos text

First 5 up as I write - 8 to follow later today (I'm getting strong hints that somebody else wants to use the phoneline!)

If I have got a name wrong please let me know, and identify the photo in question.

Not all the pictures were usable - my apologies if you are not included.

If anyone has some photos they would like to put on this site, get in touch

Great pictures Tony - Nanny Ogg, you look stunning! Really sorry I couldn't make it - other end of the country and all - but it looked like a great evening.

[reminder edited out as I was posting here while Tony the Tiger posted to Shipmeet Photos thread)

A very enjoyable evening. And well done to Tony for the photos.

Yes, great to see so many people.

Thanks Tony for the photos. For some reason I often seem to look odd or asleep in Shipmeet pictures. I don't know why that is.

Tony, how do I get in without a password? (I don't see any "photos" to click on.)

I got confused too - you need to click on the black word "photos" and then it opens up.

Thank you Jack [Smile] though credit should go to TonyK and his magic camera.

Unlike the wimps I didn't have a sore head the next day [Big Grin] though I didn't surface until 11.30 the next morning.

Then again I am well practised at quaffing the ale.

[Confused]

Sorry - should have made it a bit clearer!

Not the most obvious of places to click - but it's what the free Zoomshare service sets up and I haven't yet worked out how to change it (or even if it is possible to do so).

Hope all is OK now following Daisymay's advice!

I am quite possibly the least photographic person in the universe. [Disappointed] I have never understood why this is, however.

If you think the day-to-day eyeliner is scary, Tony, just be glad that you've never seen me when I'm all ready for a night out! [Devil] , etc.

The tart thing was indeed very funny. No hard feelings Doris darling, I'd have done exactly the same thing if it had been the other way around, as you know full well! [Snigger] And I am, after all, the Ship's Wench (or will be soon, at any rate!)
