I have about 50 theology book I need rid of, with possibly more to come when I've had another purge of my shelves. What possibilities are open to me? Obviously the first option is to sell (money's always welcome!), but I suspect I'll end up giving most of them away. It's rather a lot to dump on my local Oxfam bookshop, but are there any agencies in the Greater Manchester area who would find good homes for them? Anyone who'd want a random batch of mostly Anglo-Catholic inclined theology? Apart from a handful that might find their way to ebay, I cast myself on the wisdom of the Ship!

Have you considered offering them to shippies, on condition that they pay for shipping?
A few years ago a shippie offered some books on NT Greek, and I jumped at the chance.

If you have a nearby seminary or university theology department, ask if you can leave them in the lobby in a box marked "Free Books - help yourself".

Ok
Technically, University of Manchester has a theology department and there is also Luther King House (LKH) where Methodist, Baptists, URC, Unitarians and maybe CofE (if NOC still exists) train. You could dump them at either for taking but...
I am distinctly sceptical of the value of this. For theology students, the main concern would be relevance to their courses. If not they are likely uninterested. With LKH so many books from retired clerics or widows of clerics come that way that honestly they can be treated pretty shabbily. My father (previous staff librarian there) views it as binning by proxy.
There is Pendleburys which is going to be my first port of call when I need to dispose of most of a theology collection. In my case, it is not wanting money for them but wanting them in the hands of people who want those books.
With Oxfam, I would consider offering anything that would fit with these books to them.

I did hear a (possibly apocryphal) tale about a bookshop that tried that idea to get rid of Reader's Digest condensed books. At the end of the day, they found they had more books in the bin than they had started with...

It is a scientific fact that Reader's Digest condensed books multiply by mitosis.

I like it.
Despite Jengie's scepticism, this used to happen quite regularly when I studied theology. True, undergrads are mostly interested in their courses. But postgrads fell upon these boxes like gannets, especially if they contained clean and newish items.

We're a bit further away than might be ideal, but if it's a collection that might be of interest to current ordinands, we (my fellow seminarians and I) might be interested over in Mirfield.

Sioni Sais, it's a nice idea, but I don't really enjoy that sort of network of connections any more.
Moo - I'd never thought of that. Thank you! I'll put together a list and post it on this thread. Probably tomorrow. TomM, watch out for the list and see if anything takes your fancy.

I'd say talk to a specialist second hand shop. I know that one (not a theological specialist) pays for good quality books - though maybe not so much.
Might be easier and less hassle than trying to stick them up on ebay etc.

It might work to spread the options out - offer them here, those that aren't taken, maybe offer to a college, or put any that you think may be worth anything on ebay.
Whatever is left (possibly all except the one that a shipmate wanted) take to Oxfam and/or other second hand shops.
If you spread them around, it seems like rather less of a burden to put in one place.
Not that I am an expert. "book disposal" in anathema for me.

My church has a used book sale every year. I can tell from the offerings that the clergy and seminarians are using it to clear off the shelves a bit. (Unfortunately unlikely to be useful to you, since we are near Washington DC.)

Talk to my neighbors. A few months back, someone dumped ten years worth of bound volume "Watchtower" magazines into their Little Free Library. That's one reason why I will never install one in my yard.

Right, here goes. Here's a list of the books. They're of varying antiquity and quality - I rarely make marks in books, but in a few of these previous owners have done so. I'm going to try and set up my PayPal to receive payments for postage & packing, which I'll try and do in the next day or two. I haven't calculated postage costs in advance - I'll do that as and when anyone says they want one. UK postage shouldn't be in excess of about £3, even for the larger books. PM me for further details or to say "Gimmee!", and please be tolerant of any delays - I have other work to do!

You might try Book Crossing. Haven't used it myself, but have heard good things about it.
You might want their "controlled release" option, rather than "into the wild".
That should pique your curiosity!

The M Wiles book on 'What is Theology?' looks interesting, but I will have to ask the RNIB if they have a talking book copy. I looked him up in Wikipedia and disagree with him of course! But some of his ideas look as if they would make good subjects for discussion. At the bottom of the Wikipedia page, there are some associated 'questions people ask', so I am going to look at those now.
May I suggest that you could possibly place a small ad in your local paper? I'm not sure which section and what sort of ad, but people do tend to read their local papers from cover to cover, don't they, and you might be lucky.

It's the Bettenson translation in Penguin Classics, Albertus. Nicely flowing prose style, I thought.
Well, today's the day I get some exercise taking heavy parcels to the post office! If hosts don't mind me prolonging this, I'll post a revised list of what's still available later, along with about a dozen new additions. Thanks to all who've helped so far.

I should probably say the publication dates usually refer to the edition - I haven't bothered noting reprints. (I seriously doubt there are any valuable first editions among them!)
