We don't have Girl Scouts in the immediate neighborhood. All our close neighbor-kids are teen and young adult males.
They get us at church. Charity begins in the pews.
Samoas. Tagalongs. Thin Mints. Whatever-the-heck you call the peanut-butter-and-chocolate ones. Boxes and boxes of them. All for a Good Cause and thus For The Lord, too.
I'm working now so I wasn't at home alone with them this time. They actually got eaten up by the kids and the FG and they lasted a week.
I don't know whether to be grateful I missed the pig-out, or sorry about it.

I'm seeing Laura passed out face-up on the floor in her power suit, she's spread-eagled, stomach distended, glasses knocked askew, her fingers twitching slighty, chocolate smeared around her mouth, and the floor around her littered with ripped cellophane and broken, emptied cookie boxes.
Children cry behind closed doors and a man's voice comforts them, saying. "Hush, my sweet ones, the storm will soon pass."
In self-defense against the Girl Scouts I have hired sherrif's deputies, grim men all, to escort me to the grocery store and back. They have inviolable orders to guard me against the snack-packing, dewy-eyed minions of Hell, and I've authorized them to use deadly force if a Thin Mint comes within ten paces of me.

You should all count yourselves lucky: you are civilians. I'm actually amongst the ranks: a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America, and I have to fend off my troops with a bloody STICK. Still, perhaps such endless exposure has hardened me to their attacks. I somehow have only one box of Thin Mints and they are still sitting in my cupboard, unopened, after three whole weeks.

At least my daughter is no longer one of the trans-fat-pushing demonic ones, and we are no longer morally obligated to buy a couple dozen boxes. She's gone vegan to boot, and won't even eat them. So when I went to Albertson's and was ambushed outside the door, I almost resisted--just a box of Samoas and one of Walkabouts. They're almost gone, and I'm having pre-withdrawal symptoms already--I keep putting off eating the last one, but I don't know how long I can hold out...

We, the citizens of the United Kingdom, feel duty bound to support our fellow Shipmates overseas. We will all, forthwith, PM you our addresses. Thus you may earn yourselves Brownie Points for three good deeds: the purchase of said cookies and Thin Mints which are clearly raising money for a good and worthy cause; the non-eating of said cookies which is beneficial to your weight and Lenten promises; and the giving of pleasure in cookie-form to those overseas who are without girl-scouts to evade.
See how we think of you?

Shush Sioni! There was a good chance of this min thin scam working. The Americans tend to a very kind hearted bunch, always ready to share their good fortune.
Not put their backs up my reminding them of the pink meatish thingy. No! Instead remind them that we do not have freedom of speech, nor the right to bear arms (well apart from Paddington and myself).

True bb, the Americans are very generous (crawl, crawl, snivel and crawl) but I believe they do it best out of the goodness of their heart rather than when their government tells them to.
As for Thin Mints I'm sure Mrs Sioni could rustle these up if she had the recipe. The Health Education Council have a price on her head as a result of her Grantham Gingerbreads.

Sioni, if it was a store selling Girl Scout cookies, that would be avoided. Rather it's these little adorable minions that corner you at church, at random stores, and their parents haunt you at work, and suddenly you've bought 12 boxes and you can't give them away because everyone else around you has done the same. Then just when you've finished your last box, and are needing another "hit," the little rugrats are nowhere to be found, and you are left to convulse in withdrawal in your own spittle.

No no no. Please read for comprehension. The suggestion is that our beloved American cousins should send the cookies but retain the actual girl-scouts. After all, how could we deprive them of their sweet pony-tailed offspring? No, we will simply relieve them of the undesirable side-effects of being the Nation of Cookie-selling Girl Scouts. I wuz worried about this being the thin end of the wedge. American businesses know how susceptible we are to their products and once the Girl Scout cookies arrive that will be it. They will achieve cult status in, oh, days and it will be the polenta of 2006.
I would never suggest America's finest young ladies should come here to serve in the GirlScoutCookie stores. They would have to be recruited here but quite what your average chav would look like in even an approximation to a Girl Scout uniform I can't imagine.

In order to resist the onslaught of cookies we should immunise ourselves against them first - I think that we should be sent small but regular packets of girl scout cookies so that the effects when the cookies actually reach the british market will be minimalised. quote:

Of course, the clever marketing ploy of it all is the fact that they're only available once a year. (WHich is how people know that Thin Mints last in the freezer - hoarding does occur). This is opposed to any other kind of sweet or food in the USA, however seasonal. Marshmallow Peeps are in season now, but lately you can get marshmallow christmas trees, valentine hearts, etc all made by the same company so it isn't quite as pressing an issue. (Um, unless you're me.)
The eternal cry "Its girl scout cookie time" has led to new entrepreneurship. Now the little scouties just order in loads of cookies and sell them on tables out side the Supermarket - more sales and less effort than going tdoor to door the way I had to!

I've got Tagalongs, AllAbouts and Do-Si-dos left. The Thin Mints and Samoas (gooey cookie, caramel, coconut and chocolate delights) go first. Then the Trefoils (shortbread). I'm not the Cookie Mom, but I made the mistake of volunteering to get rid of, er, sell the extras. They are bought by the case, so there are always leftovers that must be sold. I still have about eight boxes to go. Oh, and JB - it is ALWAYS during Lent, and the little darlings are trained to tell you how WELL the cookies freeze! Anne L.

Babybear and Smudgie: send me your addresses by PM and I shall send you a box of your choice of girl scout cookies. I recommend the Thin Mints (crisp mint chocolate cookies enrobed in dark chocolate). Also good are the Samoas (crispy cookie topped with caramel dredged coconut and chocolate stripes) and Tagalongs (peanut butter patties on cookies enroben in chocolate). I'm ordering a batch for my sister in a few hours' time. As to the other non-US shipmates, the next two to PM me will also get a box, their choice. I understand that some are made which do not involve chocolate but frankly can't see the point of that.
I must warn you: they are highly addictive. And they only come once a year. [ 10. March 2005, 14:29: Message edited by: Laura ]

If I recall correctly, I earned badges in camping, assorted crafts, hospitality , sport, writing, hiking, books, horseback riding, and some other stuff. We had weekly meetings and occasional camping trips. The cookies we received directly from the powers of Darkness, through a conjuring ceremony. I was always very proud of my "Pagan Feminist Cookie Conjuring" badge.

These are called "site sales." The GSA started doing site sales when their door-to-door profits declined due to people just not being home during the daylight hours (moms working outside the home, etc.). I learned that at Cookie Training, which I had to sit through in order to be the troop Cookie Mom. (Actually, it wasn't bad. Very professional. Those people know their cookies.) Another factoid from cookie training: The GSA are the third-highest selling producers of cookies in the US. Not bad for a once-a-year marketing effort.

To put all this in perspective for our UK friends, consider GSA cookies to be, oh, say, the moral equivalent of TimTams dusted with heroin and crack cocaine sprinkles. There are people who literally order cases of the damn things so as to have a year's supply of cookies until the next Cookie Orgy.
It's quite the domestic triumph to offer one's guests Thin Mints or Samoas six months after everyone else has eaten their last, miserably hoarded cookie. Ask Sine.

Out of curiosity, I clicked on jedijudy's link to the Girl Scouts website and followed a few other links that led me to the information that I have not missed the grocery store marketing campaign in my area.
So now I can't go to the grocery store for the next few weeks. I'm going to have to do all my grocery shopping at the independently-owned convenience store around the corner or the 7-11 up the street. Though on second thought, considering the food those places sell, I may as well eat Girl Scout cookies.

Hmmmm...7-11 microwave burritos and Top Ramen vs. Thin Mints and Samoas.
Tough choice, Ruth.

The rest of you are welcome to Tagalongs, Somoas, and all the rest. The only Girl Scout cookies I crave are the Thin Mints. They are the bestest. mmm...thin mints...mmm

I will be making a space in my freezer in anticipation... purely in the spirit of transatlantic cooperation, I hasten to add.
