The QB tag is automatically inserted when using the quote post function. The B tag is automatically inserted when using the bold function. As far as I know, they are completely interchangable in practice.

Click on the button that says URL.

Up will come a box that says ENTER THE COMPLETE URL FOR THE LINK YOU WANT TO ADD.

You could, if you are mad, try typing in this space. This might work if it was a short link.

However you probably want to copy and paste the link from the other site. This means having another window open in your browser. If you can't do that, and can't work out how to copy and paste, er, I suggest you get one of your relatives (possibly great-grandchildren ) to give you a lesson.

Make sure you have exactly one copy of the text http:// in the box as it will only work with one: not with zero or two.

Now click on OK. Then you'll get another box that says Now enter the title of the web page you wish to reference. You can put anything here. However if you are not linking to Ship of Fools it is not very sensible to type Ship of Fools.

I'm not normally one to shy away from picking on whiners, but I think your wee experiment might be a bit flawed, Kelly. Firstly, how often is an edit merely a one-character change? Secondly, you wouldn't be on a broadband connection, would you? Finally, as a Host you're not subject to flood control restrictions, which might play a part in editability.

Other than that, though, yeah - people should learn how to use Preview post.

I didn't mean editing powers, just that you didn't have to wait 90 seconds between edits. If the flood protection applies to edits (and I'm not sure it does, because it only was instituted after I became a host), then it's possible that some shipmates might not be able to edit more than a couple times regardless of how fast they type.

The security notice is no longer there. I didn't mean the one about "secure and nonsecure items.. do you wish to procede", I meant the one that had a big exclamation mark on it and said that the site's security clearance had either elapsed or been removed.

The code tags reproduce everything in them exactly as typed, so other UBB or HTML codes (eg Greek letters) aren't converted to what they represent. Very useful for explaining how to code something. But, also very dangerous as the software doesn't put in carriage returns etc to format the page to fit the window width.

The UBB software generally formats text to a certain extent. It'll ignore any leading spaces, and put in only one space if several are entered together. That makes putting together neatly organised stuff (for example something like a table) very difficult. It can be done. Small things in code tags if you don't want special characters. Or lots of non-breaking spaces (special character & nbsp ; ).

Well, if it gets limboed you don't really need to save it as we'll keep hold of it

To save a thread (especially a long one) the easiest way seems to be to open the "printer friendly view" (icon at bottom left of the thread) which generates a file without all the avatars and sigs. You can then save that using the "File->Save As..." menu option. Or, you can copy the whole thing into a text editor and save it there.

To use italics, simply type in [ i ] before the text, and [ /i ] after it.

Without the spaces, of course.

No no no, read Scot's post.

Type the word you want to trademark

Leave a space.

Then type &trade with a semicolon straight after the word trade.

A semi colon is this one ; (Sorry if that sounds like stating the obvious)

If you're logged in prior to posting then your signature will appear. If you log in at the same time as posting, it won't.

That's what happens. I don't really know why it does, just one of the little quirks in the sorftware.

You must use your user name to log in. When you registered, you had the option of using a different displayed name, and now you can change that again. Whatever your displayed name, always use your registered username to log in.

I am very sure that it is time to retire the name Jeremiah Gutzywuk - it was a very bad biblical Hebrew pun, and not that easy for folks to spell.
Crackers & Goat Cheese sounds kinda funky to me; I think I will enjoy using it.

I don't use Firefox (yes, I'm lazy and use the browser that was installed on my PC when I got it) so I don't know the settings that might result in what you're experiencing. Perhaps someone who does use Firefox might be able to help.

It certainly looks like you're getting the message I see in the status window posted in the reply window, rather than the actual code for each smilie.

You could type each one by hand if you want to use smilies. The codes (with a space added so they don't just convert to smilies) are:

Works fine on my copy of Firefox (1.5.0.1).

My guess is that you have a dodgy java module lurking in the depths of your PC, put there by a previous application - it is likely to be either Sun Java or the defunct Microsoft Virtual Machine.

You could try following the instructions here then reinstall Firefox as well. But all at your own risk, etc., etc.!

I used to be able to post URL's. I would use the edit function in the upper left corner of my screen. I would "copy" the URL from the address line of the web page I wanted to link. Then I would go in to the reply screen, click on URL, a pop-up would over the reply and I would go to the edit fundtion and click on "paste."

Now I can't do it because the URL pop-up goes to the upper left corner and covers the edit function. I can't get to the "paste" to click on it.

What am I doing wrong?

You need to make sure you close the quote/qb tags at the end of each section you quote and reopen them again for the next section. So, you'll have something like

The closing tags always have a / before them. And, my post contained CODE tags enclosing the UBB so you could see it. It's probably best to quote another post to practise on because of that.

Please note that in the following, there are extra spaces in the [ quote ] codes so that they show up here; IRL the brackets would be snuggled up against the code word.

They come in nested pairs: for every [ quote ] at the beginning of something, there must be a [ /quote ] at the end.

As a beginning exercise, delete any and all [ qb ] and [ /qb ] when quoting and simply concentrate on keeping track of the [ quote ]s.

It also helps to work first on a simple two paragraph quote, rather than dealing with multiple quotes, nested quotes, or quotes including other code (such as urls).

On a desktop, I don't know about laptops cos I rarely use them, the "alt-sequence of numbers" method of getting special characters only works using the number pad on the right of the keyboard.

I'm so glad to see a thread on this, because some of the misapprehensions out there, at least in North America, are driving me nuts. In this context "ETA" means "Edited To Add". Yes, it's a later thought added in. If you need to edit a post then click on the icon above it that looks like a bit of paper with a pencil. Note, you can only edit your own posts, and then only within two minutes.

Edited in comments often get put in square brackets (or a comment to explain the edit is). This seems to be a convention picked up from the hosts who will do that to clarify what they've done and seperate their comment from the rest of the post.

Thanks. For some reason, I often have a brainfreeze that means I don't pick up mistakes despite copious use of preview post, and often only see them later when re-reading. I was hoping it was possible to go back in and correct them (I'm used to this on another board, which inserts a comment about time edited etc). Guess I'll just live with it

If you look at the top of their post (the line with the pretty pictures for sending PMs etc.) the first picture (to the left of the word "Posted" looks like a piece of paper with a corner folded down (alledgedly). If you right-click on it (assuming Windows), on the pop-up menu will be "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut". This will put the keystrokes of the URL into the clipboard.

Go to the thread you are replying in and click "Add Reply", write your post as far as where you want to put the link and click the URL button. Paste (Ctrl-V or Right-Click and Paste) and the link will appear in the little box. Click the button and add the word(s) you want to be in red (for a link) and click the button again. The post will be inserted into your text (as external links are).

I'd check using Preview Post and following the link if I were you.

This will bring up a new window without the left side bar, which is the only way of linking to a post within a thread. There's a *fancy way of linking to a thread with the frame round it, but it will only take you to the top of that page.

[* You put "http://ship-of-fools.com/UBB/frameit.htm?" in front of the link you have to paste (it involves a bit of juggling with a Notepad file so you can copy the link and the text - I keep the text in a file so I can refer to it when needed)]

How do I find the URL of a thread in, say, Purgatory? I can copy it, when I've got it, but do I then go to the thread I'm replying to and paste it into that URL?

When you're on the home page for each board right click on a thread title and there'll be an option like "copy shortcut" that'll put the URL into your clipboard. You can then paste that into the reply window just like any other URL.

Question: Is there any way of indenting text on certain lines, rather than it always starting on the left hand margin?

Tab just moves away from the text box, and leading spaces seem to get removed by the software.

For most purposes, the list function works. But I'm working on a creed, and refuse to write ones with bullet points - it will look like it's escaped from Powerpoint!

Hello. I am new.

I am not sure whether this is the right thread, but it said "practice thread" (no idea what "UBB" is, sorry, the page did not enlighten me either). I wanted to try out posting b4 going for a real one.
Or is there some playground thread for newbies to bond a bit before their first day at school? (I shall not go to Hell first thing in the morning, I have gathered that much).

I have read the board rules but the links for "trolling" and "fire-baiting" did not work, so I have no clue what they are. But I understand they are evil, base and mean and presumably punishable by burning at the stake? Probably they are something I am doing right now? Or about to do next?

Anyway, this was just to say hello.

And if trolling and fire-baiting are something easily done by mistake rather than intent, I should be glad to be enlightened before I am flamed.

Hi, Menantes. There is a thread in All Saints just for the purpose of introducing yourself around (click here). That's a good place to start.

UBB is the code that our software uses for making quotes, italics, bold text, hyperlinks, and so on. This thread is just a place to try things out before using them in "real" posts. It's also a good place to ask for help with those sorts of things.

Trolling and flamebaiting are forms of disruptive behavior often seen on internet bulletin boards. Loosely speaking, they both involve making obnoxious and inflammatory posts for the purpose of upsetting people and provoking conflict. These are intentional behaviors, so you don't need to worry about doing them accidentally.

Quick query. Some posters like to em- bold -en their quotes from other shipmates. Is there a function that does this automatically, or do you have to put the ([B])in after the ([QUOTE])

The "reply with quote" option puts the bold on automatically. I know some people then take it out because they prefer not to have quotes in bold ...

Just to the left of the date/time above each post there's a little icon like a bit of paper. Right click on that, copy the URL into your clipboard and use that.

Am I the only one to notice that when you hover your mouse over the icon, it says "overused"???

Perhaps someone's trying to tell us something

Btw, I rather think it's a shame that we can't make a whole row of 's and set them off one after another, so that they do a kind of Mexican wave.
