At the London meet last night, a few of us were of the opinion that we should set aside an evening specifically to celebrate Gambit's life. This would have to be in the new year and, obviously, the venue would have to pass the "Gambit test". The priorities are
- Somewhere in Central London with good transport links so that non-London shippies can attend
- Somewhere that serves Real Ale (Preferably Fullers ESB)
- Somewhere where smoking is permitted
The Sanctuary in Tothill Street fits the bill perfectly.
I know that there's already a meet planned for 21st Jan. Do we want to combine that one with a memorial, or would people like to set aside a separate evening for a night of drinking and debauchery? [ 11. May 2011, 16:34: Message edited by: Spike ]

I would love to try and make this meet, even though it will mean going to London for the first time in 13 years.
And as far as I know, the 21st would be fine for me.

I don't have any objections to the date, nor yet to the Sanctuary - a fine pub, so ShadoK says, and he should know as he keeps ending up in there after work! However, I kind of wanted to go to the place Gambit found for the Cusanus meet. It was the last post of Gambit's that I read before I heard the sad news.
Still, I'll abide by the wishes of the majority.

I had already got the 21st meet in the diary and would like to make the memorial meet so it works well to combine them on the 21st. I agree with Moth that as Gambit had already suggested a place to meet with Cusanus that is another option.

Excactly what I was about to say. I'm sure there's one there somewhere of him doing his famous "fist in mouth" trick, which not only makes a good pic, but is also a pretty impressive thing to be able to do.
It's things like the fist in the mouth and the trademark cowboy boots that we want to remember on the memorial meet. It seems that the general consensus is that it should be on the 21st. The Queens Arms would be OK, but, as The Man Himself said, it's a bit off the beaten track. As this is a meet that may well attract a fair number of non-Londoners, I still reckon The Sanctuary is as good a place as any. (They do accommodation there too for people too pissed to get home)

I can do that too, you know. It's just that I tend not to, what with it all being unladylike and stuff. I remember I told him once, and he was so disbeleving that he said that if I could prove it, he'd buy me a whole bottle of Bombay Sapphire, and some tonic, and a lemon to put in it.
He did as well. He was so shocked that I hadn't been bluffing that he had to...

Which, by the way, is exactly the kind of thing he'd have wanted at his meet...

The trouble with the Sanctuary is its not a very nice pub. There's nothing specifically or obviously wrong with it its just too modern and clean and the staff wear uniform and there is no atmosphere and they close on time. Its a bit artificial.

I just deleted a post in which somebody speculated on the Real Life identity of another shipmate.
Don't do that.
If people want to reveal themselves, that's their call. If you really have a question about somebody's identity, handle it via PM with the individual in question only.

I've had recommendations for the YHA in London. Not sure if it is any good for this meet. You can even get private rooms.

The Sanctuary is a pub and does pretty good food.
Difficult to say what time London meets start. Gambit would invariably be the first to arrive sometime in the early evening and we stat til we're chucked out.

I wonder if a passing host might put the date in the thread title? (Not wanting to tell them what I had to re-read the thread to see when it was).
I met Gambit once at a Croydon meet. I seem to remember this was the one he fell asleep on the train or something and didn't make it home until the following morning!

I think that happened more than once! I certainly remember one Croydon meet when he managed to get stuck between the train and the platform on the way home.

Auntie D, The Sanctuary is on Tothill St (nearest Tube - St Jamess's Park map here). In order to get there from St James's Tube Station (Circle and District Lines):
1. Come out of the Main Entrance at St James's. 2. Cross the Broadway (you should see New Scotland Yard on your right). 3. Walk down Tothill St (towards Westminster Abbey) - you will pass a Pret a'Mange and an Eat. 4. Once you reach Eat, the Sanctuary pub should be just in front of you.
Total duration of journey (shorter than it'd take to pour a pint of Guinness ).
Victoria Station (mainline and Tube) and Westminster Tube (Circle, District and Jubilee Lines) are also within 10 minutes walking distance.
