AKA Erin Gives the Gift of Life This Holiday Season.

Since there are a bunch of sick mofos in Hell, who volunteered entries when all I'd done was state what the usual rules for these things are, I have decided to kick it off for real this time. So, here they are, the rules for the Ship of Fools Celebrity Death Pool, with thanks to the SDMB for the basics:

1. You must pick 13 well-known people (the definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major outlet. Examples: The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, CNNSI) whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2004.

2. Points are awarded according to the following formula: the celebrity's age at the time of death subtracted from 100. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.

3. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (e.g., some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church or something).

4. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.

5. You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. E.g., a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.

6. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates, with the exception of police officers and members of the armed services who kill someone in the line of duty.

7. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 2359 EST December 31st. If your candidate kicks it before 2359 EST Dec 31st, you will be allowed to substitute a new person. You can also change your submissions at any point before Dec 31st. After the new year rings in here in northern Florida, you're stuck with your last set of entries.

There are also a couple of extraneous categories:

Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: person who picks the first death of 2004.

Quantity Not Quality Award: person who picks the most people who croak in 2004, regardless of their points value.

So, you sick bastards, let the games begin. [Smile]

Erin:

1. Will there be prizes? (think of the possibilities)
2. Do you get negative points if your person dies at an age in excess of 100 years?
3. Can more than one person pick the same vic ... ahem ... person?

Thanks

sharkshooter, the prize is knowing that you could give Madame Cleo a run for her money. [Big Grin] No negative points will be awarded, but unless you're going for the QNQA, what's the point? And you can select whomever you wish, even if someone else has already listed him/her.

FWIW I posted these in what I thought was roughly the order of likelihood of clog-popping.

So the first 4 are persons widely reported to be very sick.

It seems like you guys already have the best names (Thatcher, JPII, Reagan, etc.) If I'm to stand any chance of winning I'll need to gamble that they'll make it through and my list croak it. So here goes:

Mohammed Ali
Ronnie Biggs
George Best
Max Bygraves
Simon Cowell
Billy Graham
Steve Irwin
Nelson Mandela
Denis Norden
Jimmy Saville
Michael Schumacher
Peter Ustinov
Ant&Dec (I'll have these as a joint entry, even though it takes me over 13, as no one yet has been able to tell which is which. I'll only claim the points if they both die [Snigger] )

Let me know if any of these are dead already, particularly if they're Ant and/or Dec.

Cheers,

Uriel.

He's an actor and comedian over here, he hosts the US version of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" and acts in the "The Drew Carey Show" sitcom. He's a heavyset guy and he likes to party, so I'm wondering if he'll stroke out or have a heart attack.

Okay, this is the list from the Hell thread, but I've taken out Terri Schindler-Schiavo because she is dead, and saying she is alive puts me in the same boat as John Ashcroft, a fate worse than death, IMHO.

1 Osama Bin Laden (if he's not already dead now, he can't last that long, surely)

2 Yasser Arafat (maybe Israel will do the assassination thing after all)

3 Tony Blair (well, he did have a heart attack)

4 David Blaine (bound to do something dangerous next year. His luck won't last forever)

5 Michael Moore (taking on gun-owners, got to get it sometime soon)

6 Terri Schindler-Schiavo (Given that this is not in Hell, I won't detail how I would like his hands to be rendered "cold and dead", but I will say some people should go out with a bang.)

7 Margaret Thatcher (getting on a bit)

8 The Queen (just have this feeling)

9 Michael Jackson (and I posted my original list before he hit the headlines. Maybe it is a sign.)

10 Me (so that, if I get hit by a bus, there will be some silver lining to the cloud. Unless crossing without waiting for the lights to change disqualifies me)

11 Ayatollah Ali Khamene'i (leader of Iran- could be where the next war happens)

12 The Pope (well, seems a pretty safe bet)

13 Prince Harry (unlikely, but he is 18, so lots of points if he pops his clogs)

Just a little kick up the board - If you want to join in you have a couple of weeks left.

This thread will then be left open - probably languishing at the bottom of page 3 until people start dying.

I'm thinking people might want to change some of the names - Saddam maybe?

My choice:
1. Richard Branson (preferably from a balloon)
2. Arnold Schwartzenegger
3. Mullah Omar (the missing Taliban leader)
4. The Dear Leader of North Korea
5. General Pinochet
6. Alistair Cooke
7. Jimmy Young (ex-Radio 2 presenter)
8. Pope John Paul II
9. David Attenborough
10. Richard Attenborough
11. Bill Pertwee (one of the few surviving actors from Dad's Army)
12. Tom Baker (because the Doctors have been dying in order, and it's his turn)
13. Leslie Crowther (game show and Crackerjack host)

I found it really hard to think of any prominent women who might die next year. I don't know if that's because there aren't many around, or if I'm just ill-informed (probably the latter).

OK, here's my little lot. I've just noticed that I seem to be horribly sexist as I only have three women on my list. Oh well. The candidates are as follows:

1) Patricia Routledge (British actress for those overseas who may not know)
2) Michael Parkinson
3) Thom Yorke ('cos you have to put a young musician in there somewhere)
4) Ken Livingstone (Don't want this to happen, obviously, but going on the theory that God takes all the good ones....)
5) Jacques Chirac
6) Queen Elizabeth II
7) Bernard Manning
8) Jim Davidson
9) Michael Owen
10) Sean Connery
11) Boris Johnson
12) Martin Scorsese
13) Zsa Zsa Gabor

As per Erin's rules - no more changing to or more people adding to the game.

This thread will stay open all year for people to make comments on etc.

Good luck!

Shipmates will be sad to hear that not only did the British comedian Bob Monkhouse die recently, but the most wonderful American-turned-British writer Joan Aiken did.

But we were all much to civilised to bet on either of them.
