I am sure the BBC’s Children In Need appeal does very, very good work with the huge amounts of money they raise. So perhaps I’m just mean-spirited and prematurely Scrooge-like, but the Friday night telethon is really tiresome and problematic in its sudden switches from jolly light entertainment to “cry at this sad story” film reports, the celebrities urging us to give our money (when if they got together and gave a similar proportion of their wealth/income as ordinary people do, or even just paid their taxes, they could help solve huge amounts of these problems) potentially hypocritical, and the Radio 2 “only the rich need apply” auctions just... just... I don’t know the right word, but I really don’t get on with Children In Need week.

I agree and I haven't watched it for many years precisely because of this. I find the the smug self-congratulatory attitude of the presenters and stars really sickening.

Very popular opinion. There are sometimes sketches that I want to see, but I cannot watch the whole lot.
TBH, I normally fast forward through the charity appeals. I feel bad for doing so, but I don;t need ot be made ot feel worse. And yes, if we as a country took all we should in tax, we could provide the 50M for CiN without any of this. As well as fund the rest of our country.
There is a meme on Twitter - a repeat from last year - suggesting we give 350M to suffering children, and have a Trident in Need day.

UO: Genesis were at their best between Peter Gabriel leaving and Phil Collins having his first solo album.
And in that period, COllins shows off what a superb singer he can be. Something, IMO, he has never managed as a solo artist.

Unpopular opinion: I find most people I encounter amongst religious professionals are unduly complacent and selfcongratulatory. Is this a panic response to the decline of formal/ traditional religion? For a more outward looking and critical approach, should I seek out 'humble Lutherans' or low church Anglicans or taciturn presbyterians, etc?

Agree about Roald Dahl - horrible. And my children, who were read copious amounts of his stuff as children (though not by us) didn't like his books either.
There is a cruelty in RD's work which is unsettling, and which he frequently employed in real life.

The available pool of "talent" for election to the House of Commons is small enough - God forbid that we should be forced to scrape through the bottom of the barrel for the Lords.
All that is required for the upper chamber is (a) for life peerages to be outlawed for has-been politicians; (b) for the Spiritual Lords to be opened up to senior clerics from other faiths; (c) for those few to be honoured with a life peerage to first understand they will be required to give, say, 10 years to the House and also to be of the calibre in their field where they will have something to contribute.

No, not at all.
But an "unpopular opinion" is ambiguous - it could be read as either "this is unpopular, but I really like.." or "this is unpopular, but I think x sucks".

My UO for this (and every) Christmas season: The Toys for Tots campaign. May the whole outfit prosper and grow rich and buy a hotel with a thousand rooms and be found dead in every one of them.
Here we have children with dire, horrifically expensive medical needs losing their insurance, one of the highest child poverty rates in the developed world, children whose most ardent wish is for a full belly on two or three successive days of the week, or a coat to wear to school when it's freezing out, and what do we have for them? Toys for Tots.
I have nothing against either tots or toys, but for the sake of the living Christ, couldn't we attend to these other urgent needs first?

Ah yes - over here, we have 'Toy Services' in some churches (usually on Advent Sunday, which means that the liturgy is somewhat dumbed-down).
The worthy idea is that suitable toys are brought to church, to be passed on to the Salvation Army for distribution to the needy.
Alas, my UO relates to the practice of some churches to invite children to 'Bring-and-Show' a toy or something (a new SmartPhone, tablet, bicycle, or whatever) in church on Christmas morning.

The program at my church provides each child with a toy (or gift recommended by a parent) and a stocking -- as well as an outfit of clothing and a pair of shoes/socks. The family gets a family gift (based on their requests), usually kitchenware or other household goods. And each family gets a gift card to a local grocery chain. Occasionally we can set them up with gently-used furniture if needed.

Somewhat UO - Dark Side of the Moon is still one of the best albums of all time. Probably the best.
The Great Gig in the Sky is the essence of perfection in music making. Whether you play an instrument, or sing, you should try to put that level of passion and emotion into what you do.

It shouldn't be the 'done thing' to let older people off the bus first. They just walk slower once they're off so those of us with a brisker pace overtake them a few seconds later anyway. It's suicidal convention to show deference to the elderly, but in this instance it is a mere nicety that serves no practical purpose.
