Click on the " " symbol, and it will do it automatically.

Is this right? I tried cutting everything between the attribution line and the last line, but ended up with all kinds of debris. Should I cut text in a different way than using the control key?

It looks right for a "reply with quotes". When deleting unwanted bits of the quote (generally it's best to just quote the bit you're actually responding to rather than the entire post) you need to ensure that you leave matching pairs of control tags (the bits in square brackets such as QUOTE or QB, they should have a /QB etc closing tag). Just highlight the bit you don't want and hit the delete key works best I find.

How do I quote multiple posts? I tried it with cut and paste, disastrously.

There is no automated way to quote multiple posts. You will either have to respond with a separate post for each reply, or master the <quote></quote> coding for what you want to combine. (Except with square brackets, of course.)
