Not a great way to start my first message to ship of fools, but I wanted those who knew him to know that my brother, James Rawling (known to some of you as Gambit), collapsed and died last night in St Thomas' hospital, London.
James had been suffering ongoing heart trouble for the last 6 years or so, and had been taken into hospital on Friday 2nd December after the Kings College carol service. At the moment it is not clear what happened to James last night.
I spoke to him just last evening and he sounded cheerful if bored at the prospect of spending more time in hospital. As a family we are incredibly shocked - and so many apologies to those people hearing this news via the web (I couldn't think of any other way to reach James' friends from the Ship).
I will post any details of the funeral in due course, and in the meantime thank you for remembering James in your prayers.
With best wishes for Advent

Goodness! I'd only met him the once when he visited these parts for a shipmeet and came to my church on the Sunday. He seemed quiet but we'd PMd a few times. I can't believe it.
Many prayers for him, and for you and your family, Sarah.

Sarah,
Thank you for sharing that very sad news with us, especially at a time when the last thing you probably want to be doing is sitting in front of a computer.
Our prayers are with you and the rest of James' family at this time. And also with all of those, both here on the Ship and in real life, who counted him as a friend.

Oh my goodness. What a shock. Gambit was the instigator of 'a London shipmeet every month in 2005' and had organised and attended every one of them so far. I'm sure there will be a pint or two raised in his memory at the two meets planned for December.
Prayers for his family, and for eyeliner.

I recently met James at a mutual friends flatwarming. We nipped outside for a cigarrete together, swapped brief life stories, and compared walking sticks! He struck me as a very warm and genuine guy.
Much love goes to all of his family and friends at this very sad time.
Assuring you of my ongoing prayers.

I've bumped up the thread re tomorrow's 'Mark the Punk' meet. I can't make it, but I do hope it goes ahead. It would be a fitting remembrance, and would fulfil his 'shipmeet every month in 2005' ambition.
I'm sure we'll hear where to send donations at some point, but in the meantime I'm going to give some money to the Organ Fund in Gambit's memory. The Ship was such an important part of his life.
