Please join me in a vigil for our dear sister Molly. Let our prayers accompany her on her journey to the Gates of Larger Life. I know that many of us are thinking of and praying for Molly, but it might be good for her (and us) to know that at any given moment, someone is praying for her. With shipmates all over the world, it should be possible for someone to take each hour to "watch and pray".
I have been in prayer for the last hour (02:00-03:00 GMT) and will continue until someone signs up for the next hour.
If it would be of use to you, the American BCP Ministration to the Sick is available here .
Thank you, and bless all of you who I have not met, but love.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
God the Father, Have mercy on your servant.
God the Son, Have mercy on your servant.
God the Holy Spirit, Have mercy on your servant.
Holy Trinity, one God, Have mercy on your servant.
From all evil, from all sin, from all tribulation, Good Lord, deliver her.
By your holy Incarnation, by your Cross and Passion, by your precious Death and Burial, Good Lord, deliver her.
By your glorious Resurrection and Ascension, and by the Coming of the Holy Spirit, Good Lord, deliver her.
We sinners beseech you to hear us, Lord Christ: That it may please you to deliver the soul of your servant from the power of evil, and from eternal death, We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.
That it may please you mercifully to pardon all her sins, We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.
That it may please you to grant her a place of refreshment and everlasting blessedness, We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.
That it may please you to give her joy and gladness in your kingdom, with your saints in light, We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.
Jesus, Lamb of God: Have mercy on her.
Jesus, bearer of our sins: Have mercy on her.
Jesus, redeemer of the world: Give her your peace. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Psalm 91 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [1] 2 I will say [2] of the LORD , "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling- even the LORD , who is my refuge- 10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD , "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Eternal God, grant to your servant Molly and to us who surround her with our prayers your peace beyond understanding. Give us faith, the comfort of your presence, and the words to say to one another and to you, as we gather in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord, you have probed me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I stand. You understand my thoughts from afar. My journeys and my rest you scrutinize. With all my ways you are familiar. Even before a word is on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, you know the whole of it. Behind me and before, you hem me in And rest your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; Too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your spirit? From your presence, where can I flee? If I go up to the heavens, you are there. If I sink to the netherworld, you are present. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I seetle at the farthest limits of the sea, Even there your hand shall guide me. And your right hand hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall hide me And night shall be my light --" For you darkness itself is not dark And night shines as the day.

Truly you have formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother's womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made. My soul also you knew full well; Nor was my frame unknown to you When I was made in secret, When I was fashioned in the depths of the earth. Your eyes have seen my actions; In your book they are all written. My days were limited before one of them existed. How weighty are your designs, O God; How vast the sum of them! Were I to recount them, they would outnumber the sands; Did I reach the end of them, I should still be with you.

I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart, For you have heard the words of my mouth, In the presence of the angels I will sing your praise. I will worship at your holy temple And give thanks to your name Because of your kindness and your truth For you have made great above all things Your name and your promise. When I called, you answered me; You built up strength within me.
All the kinds of the earth shall give thanks to you, O Lord, When they hear the words of your mouth. And they shall sing the ways of the Lord: "Great is the glory of the Lord." The Lord is exalted, yet the lowly he sees And the proud he knows from afar.
Though I walk amid distress, you preserve me. Aganst the anger of my enemies you raise your hand. Your right hand saves me. The Lord will complete what he has done for me. Your kindness, O Lord, endures forever. Forsake not the work of your hands.

In you, Lord, is my protection. Never let me be ashamed. Because you do what is right, save and rescue me. Listen to me and save me. Be my place of safety where I can always come. Give the command to save me. You are my rock and my strong, walled city.
Lord God, you are my hope. I have trusted you since I was young. I have depended on you since I was born. You have been my help since the day I was born. I will always praise you.
God, your justice reaches to the skies. You have done great things. God there is noone like you. You have given me troubles and bad times, But you will give me life again. When I am almost dead, you will keep me alive. You will make me greater than ever. And you will comfort me again.
I will praise you with the harp. I trust you, my God. I will shout for joy when I sing praises to you. You have saved me.
(Psalm 71)

Lord, bless my friend Molly.
Strengthen and comfort those who watch over her and care for her.
Sustain those who long to be nearer and can only watch and wait from afar.
Grant her dignity and peace as she makes her final journey.
And thank you Lord, for the loan of her to this world which her presence has so enriched. How the angels will rejoice to greet her! And how I shall miss her.
Lord, bless my friend Molly and hold her close.

Lord, you now have set your servant free, to go in peace as you have promised; for these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see: a Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.
Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. [ 04. December 2002, 12:03: Message edited by: Erin ]

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

I am praying now, for what it's worth. I don't know what time it is GMT. It's 7:30 AM US EST. But I've been praying a lot as it is, so I don't plan on stopping after the hour is up.
I've told Molly this privately, but I will say that her grace in the face of approaching death ("Praise to God for you, Brother Death; happy are those whom you find doing God's will; from the Second Death they stand immune" as St. Francis said) has been an inspiration to me. I hope when my own time comes I will be able to greet death the way she is handling it.
Part of me is very sad about her passing soon -- and part of me thinks she does not want me to be -- and that I should remember what our faith really believes rather than earthly things. But then some of that sadness is part of being human too. I think they're both correct in an odd way, and that we shouldn't be ashamed of sorrow or grief for knowing that she won't be posting to the Ship anymore soon -- and still should remember that she is going to be still alive, though not physically -- and that she won't be "gone" but will be waiting for us when our time comes -- she's just going before we are. There's a saying: Every parting is a foretaste of death; every meeting again is a foretaste of the Resurrection. But I think it works the other way too: This death is (on one level, anyway) just another parting, like going on vacation, only (for Molly) better -- the great holiday or (if one believes in Purgatory of one kind or another) the health-spa treatment before the great holiday, the holidays which never end, in which each day is better than the one before -- and when our times come -- and/or when we are all Resurrected together on the Last Day, which will be the First Day -- then it will be a glorious reunion indeed. So it should not be "goodbye" except in the sense of "God be with you" -- but "au revoir" -- "till we meet again." Because we will.
More thoughts later if I think of any appropriate ones, but I will be praying regardless.

Molly, we pray that you feel God's love and our love.
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.
