Devoted listeners of New York's classical music station WQXR will remember the commercials featuring Jim Lebenthal, municipal bond guru extraordinaire, and those of his daughter Alexandra after he retired from the business -- a business founded, by the way, by his mother. Jim Lebenthal is now selling municipal bonds to finance renovations to the Pearly Gates.

The tree outside our office already has lights on. Write to your MP if you like, it's a civil service office.

This is dominating Australian news today (and indeed, the last couple of days). Everybody is deeply shocked.

I'm a cricket fan. I am sorry to hear of this freak accident. But all the time I was reading the story, I was wondering about the poor fellow who bowled that ball. My heart goes out to him, as well.

Yeah, he has been receiving counselling ever since this happened, and is getting a heck of a lot of public support, but I think he is going to be absolutely devastated. He's even younger - just 22 years old.

It wouldn't surprise me if Abbott decides to not play again. At the very least, he'll take himself out of the game for some time. If he were to bowl, what might go through his mind in deciding when to bowl a short-pitched delivery?

I doubt that he will be able to bowl with the level of commitment needed in the top level of the game. Even though it was a freak accident, nothing to do with him, I feel really sorry for him.

I never wanted to put Dame James on my death list, since I always hoped for another novel out of her. Even though I recognised that Pemberley was probably her swan song.

I saw her as part of a panel discussing Pride and Prejudice partly because she had written Death comes to Pemberley. She said then that she'd written Death comes to Pemberley as she knew she didn't have time to write one of her books, the immersion in the background, so DctP was something she could write as the background already existed and it was based on a book she loved.

I don't think anyone had Jack Kyle, who has died at 88. Not only was he probably Ireland's greatest rugby player, guiding them to a Grand Slam and two further Five Nations titles, but after rugby he practiced medicine in Indonesia and then, until he was seventy-four, in Zambia.

Best loved all around Latin America. This is having a big impact here. Just to give you an idea: the original run of his show was in the seventies, but it is still watched in syndication by close to a hundred million people every day today. Without any doubt a comic genious.

He's a big, big deal throughout Latin America (Spanish and Portuguese speaking) and the Latino community in the U.S. Somewhere else online someone said it was as if Jerry Lewis stayed at peak popularity for 60 years but Chespirito was really more like Charlie Chaplin (in my opinion).

Thanks, that was good to watch. Some I'd forgotten about; several left us far too early.
