Thread: New ship and new boards... please support us!

We’re building a new Ship of Fools, and we’re hoping you can help make it happen.
The new ship is going to have three main sections: a blog for comment and comedy; the bulletin boards, running on a completely new system; and the Mystery Worshipper, which will be much more interactive than before.
Choosing new software to run the boards was one of the most important decisions in launching the new ship. The Admins and editors trialled and then decided on Vanilla, which is free, open source forum software. It integrates exceptionally well with WordPress (the platform we’re going to use for the new ship) and it offers easy browsing and posting whether you’re viewing on desktop, tablet or smartphone.
At the same time, we’re upgrading the ship’s logo, slimming down the huge amount of content we have, and concentrating on the things we do best. The ship is basically getting ready for a new voyage, and we hope you’ll be with us in this exciting new venture.
We’ve opened a new site, Shipyard of Fools, where you can help us raise the money for rebuilding the ship. We need £2,500 to do the work. Our shipmates have always been amazingly supportive, and we’ve never run out of what we need to keep going in the almost 20 years we’ve been online. Please visit the Shipyard here:

I just made a payment, charged to my MasterCard. The last step before checking out was an option from PayPal to pay using their conversion rate for U.S. dollars or to have my credit card company determine the exchange rate and charge a foreign conversion fee. I chose the PayPal option, but I don't know if that will actually same me money.

Yes, everyone will need to re-register. We’re going to open registration exclusively to existing board members first, so that everyone here has the opportunity to register with their specific board details. There will probably be a week for that process, before we open the boards to the public.
And yes, the existing private boards will be available on the new boards, with the same arrangement for access and moderation.

I have a suggestion for the shiphyard: Mention early on that the donation goes through Paypal. I almost put it off because I'm at home relaxing and don't have my credit card on me. Also, when you have to enter your name and email before knowing what the payment method/options will be, sometimes I just skip it.
I love the idea of being able to save a post - although that will pose its own problems on boards that move as quickly as the SoF boards do! But it'll be great for folks to save as they go if they're composing something thoughtful, especially if they have to jump up or leave the site to check a reference.
Anyway, donation made!

I appreciate you do not spam your members emails.
This improvement may be worth mentioning to the entire member base- not as a monetary request per se, but a reminder that things are changing.
And what possibly could go on the 'what is your deeply unpopular opinion thread'- is it time to give second chances to those who request them?
I suspect there would be very few- and clearly they need to be considered case by case.
And may I please continue to be a RooK annoyer on the new ship- it still amuses me.
And for our Aussie shippies, double the pound is roughly our conversion.

The tech folks looked at the possibility of just transferring everything into new software - rather they looked for it and found it doesn't exist. So we're starting over. I for one am happy to trade being member number 13 for increased ease of reading and posting in my phone. And a search function that both searches and functions!

Vanilla is written in the same computer language as the current (as far as I can tell, UBB.classic is replaced with UBB.Threads quite a while back), and both can run on the same platform, so the import of old forum to new should be straightforward.
A big difference is that Vanilla is open source and licenced on the GPL versus being a closed source, pay-for package. IMHO GPL is kind of like Jesus, there for everyone, free as in freedom.

Well, no. While the rest of the world moved on from UBB.classic, the Ship never did. Our old boat is not really compatible with anything current.
And, frankly, the most valuable part of the Ship are the active participants. We're going to take care of you guys, and make sure everything works well for you. We felt that the focus on functionality was more important than toiling over 17,000 mostly-dormant profiles.

Hi everyone. I joined the forums recently and my purpose for being here (other than, I should have registered years ago because I love the Ship) is that I'm actually one of the technical people involved in this project.
I'm a software developer who is currently specialising in website stuff (for the technical: mostly PHP, WordPress and Laravel, but not exclusively) and my part of the work is actually co-ordinating the design and build of the new website and carrying out the technical work required.
I'm MORE involved in the website than the forums, but I did help with some of the initial evaluation of forum tools.
I'm here to try to answer more technical questions if I can, without giving too much away!!
I'm not HUGELY familiar with UBB or the culture of the Ship's forums, so bear with me. It may take me a while to fit in!
I'll reply to a few things here, but if there are lots of technical questions I'm also happy for someone to start a new thread/conversation/topic about that. Just let me know.
And just to end this introduction: THANK YOU all for contributing and making the update possible, and for bearing with us while we do it. It's change, and change is hard and takes some getting used to, but we are trying modernise the Ship to make it easier to use and better for everyone and I know that the captain and his crew have been trying to be very careful about what we do and how we do it. A lot of thought has gone into this project and we hope you'll join with our excitement about the new vessel!

Thanks! It's nice to be here. Despite being a techie, I REALLY value the community you've built here. I never build forums for ANYONE these days because, well, no one ever comes and takes part. But here is an existing community, hugely invested in the place, and I'd really like to be as open as possible about what we're doing so that you don't feel you are suddenly thrust into a new reality. I hope we can ease you in slightly.
I'm hoping that there will be some "posts" on the Shipyard site about progress - maybe some sneak peeks of what is to come? But I'll have to not go beyond captain's orders too.

First of all, some quick answers/comments on the new forums. I can't really help with structural/cultural questions, but I know the desire to keep as many things the same as possible has been high on the list of priorities.
The UBB.classic software used here is very old. Someone has referenced the fact that it's name changed from UBB.classic to UBB.threads - this happened in 1997. So - though someone may correct me - this software must be at least 20 years old now.
You may say: "But it's not broken - so why fix it?" and you'd have a point. It works, everyone is here and enjoying themselves, and it's actually really quite fast and good.
But more modern software presents new opportunities: mobile-friendliness, fancy new features, easier use for both shipmates and the crew.
We evaluated a couple of the leading open-source forum software tools and Vanilla was settled on. It was hard to find a modern solution that allowed us to preserve everything. We're making quite a big leap here. And my experience is that data migrations are hard and complex and I like to try and avoid them if possible - plus, we're also on a budget, so there are things that we just can't do. We'll do our very best to listen and incorporate your feedback and requests as we go.
On a technical note, I believe this software (UBB.classic) is running on Perl, while the later UBB.threads was originally written in Perl and then re-written in PHP. Vanilla is also written in PHP. For those that don't know and are interested PHP is probably the easiest programming language to write software that runs websites with. WordPress and Facebook both use it, for example!

OK, first thing to note is that I am definitely aiming to copy across all the MW reports. But the inner-workings of the old ship are quite barnacle-encrusted, and cleaning the data us is q little bit tricky. We are getting there though.
Secondly, on being "more interactive", I think what is meant here is that applying to be a Mystery Wosrhipper and submitting reports will be performed using a nice set of easy-to-use, web-based forms.
When you register to be a worshipper, you will need to be approved, but as soon as you are you will have a profile and login to the MW's special area of the website.
When a MW submits a report, this creates a new report in the system, emails an admin/moderator to get them to review it, and as soon as they do they can click "publish" and go live.
The old reports are also stored as HTML files - just lumps of text. Which means we can't really process the data, crunch the numbers, and do interesting things with the information in the reports. Don't worry - we're not about to go all Facebook on you and start selling your every last detail to make money!
But this will allow us to categorise and summarise information about the reports. So, for example, we can automatically create a list of all reports for a given denomination, or diocese; we can sort and order them by whatever criteria we like; we can produce statistics about reports; and yes, I think I probably agreed that I would make them searchable too!

I don't have a clue what you're doing, and I don't even know enough to ask an intelligent question, but that's OK because past experience has taught me that people like me won't be left behind by those who are doing the work.
My part will be a donation, which won't be nearly enough to express my thanks for what the Ship gives me. I'll sit down and sort it out on pay day.
