Thank you Sharkshooter, though that logic does not necessarily apply to the present topic. There are a finite number of cities in the world with the requisite population. If the first, say, 4 players choose cities that are equally spaced around the globe, then the next player would be forced to pick a city closer to one of those than they are to each other, and would thereby be one of the losers. So it isn't safe to wait until late in the game and choose a city that is not at that point a loser, as someone could still pick another city close by.
So a good initial strategy is to choose a city that is as far as possible from any other valid choice, thus minimizing the chance that a latecomer would be forced through lack of options to choose another city near yours.
Of course, this depends on the number of players involved, but since I expect this excellent quiz to attract hundreds of players, the Earth may be getting a bit crowded by the time everyone has chosen a city.

Does it need to contain your entire ship name?
I'm not sure - but you don't want to be knocked out (or in this case, not let in) on a technicality, do you?

Correct. The comment was general. Fortunately, this round is not a knock-out one.

Hint - it might be worth checking in Wikipedia to see whether your city is large enough. It might also be worth rereading the above posts to make sure you're not doing a city already named. I can see at least one pair above as well as Auckland...

Will it be helpful or will it be cheating to post a very helpful link to a distance finder that calculates between any two cities in the world? I think it will encourage the geographically-challenged.

I'm rather taken with Nouakchott in Mauritania which has an estimated 650,000 in habitants, despite being built for only 15,000 just 47 years ago. That's some population increase - apparently due to there not being many employment opportunities in the Sahara Desert!

Ode to a Smudgie
Darkling, I listen, and give a sigh For the sound of song in a unlit wood. Call'd them no names but took the road high, Leading with soft hand and heart laden with good. Whispering sweet but pleading loud to be heard As thou hovered smiling, low to the ground. Wouldst sing, little budgie? I have heard Thy fleeting cry leading to a glade unfound. I will ever gladly follow thy words, Though thy tune may become my requiem.
