Ah, mine had to rhyme.

I went with:
Grapple (gra'pul) 1.A struggle or contest in which the participants attempt to clutch or grip each other.
2.A struggle (usu. for superiority or dominance).

Rather than:
Grapple (gray'pul): A combination between a grape and an apple. It looks and feels exactly like an apple, but tastes like a grape.

But also found:
Operation Grapple was a United Kingdom tri-service exercise leading to the detonation of the first British hydrogen bomb on May 15, 1957!

But, granted, I didn't know the fruit was pronounced like that, so I bow to your superior phoneticism.

ROUND TWO : VOLCANOES

This round has proved popular twice in the past so once again we shall ask you to find a volcano that has erupted recently.

Qualification is dependent upon you choosing a volcano that has erupted more recently than the one chosen by just one other competitor.

Of course, if somebody forgets to post then you are through just by naming a volcano.

N.B. I need a link to the webpage that specifies the date of the last eruption of your chosen volcano.

Dammit - I was about to go for Anatahan.

To use the site you gave would not be very original, so I'll go for description of the Nyiragongo Volcano on this page on this page which has had an eruption plume detected on 7th September. Size isn't everything [Biased]

Shiveluch, Kamchatka, Russia. It's status is recorded as ongoing, on this site. I liked the photo up the top of the page of the volcano surrounded by snow.

Mine is concern color orange. I could not find what that meant on that site. It sounded good though, better than some that did not get assigned a concern colour.

ETA I have climbed an active volcano, guning Gede found at this this site. do I get extra points for having been up close and personal? [Razz]

Pele Volcano on Io

I claim this must beat every volcano on earth for two reasons

a) it is continually erupting
b) by the time we see it, the light is already several hours old!

Two questions:

1) Are we talking "significant eruption" or just "volcanic activity"?

2) Just to clarify, our choices have to be different than everyone else's, right? Or can you simply pick the same volcano as someone else? (It wasn't clearly stated in the rules of this round.)

I'll be boring and go for Etna. Unfortunately, I don't think the various ice volcanoes on Triton are named, nor do we know when they last erupted.

Sakura-Jima, in Japan according to this page erupted 3/8/05 and according to halfway down this page errupted 2/9/05
Either way, this is my entry.
And in the intersts of being helpful to everyone else [Big Grin] who may be looking for volcanos, Iceland has a number of the active bad-boys...

Pants [Smile] I obviously have nothing better to do today than police this thread. I think S'more has already selected that one.

(or maybe I am just blatantly trying to get extra brownie points up because I goofed last round.)

I wouldn't be much of a Martian if I didn't go for Olympus Mons.

Of course, it's last eruption is estimated to have been about 40 million years ago. But I'm optimistic that someone will forget to post in this round...
