( copied and slightly edited from the beginning of the 2006 thread)

As people have been suggesting on the current thread, it is time to start thinking about people who you think might shuffle of planet Earth during 2007. You don't have to post your list yet, but if you do not post it before 11:59 on 31st December 2006 (GMT) you will be unable to take any further part in the contest. Have fun, Think carefully and read the rules below.

1. You must pick 13 well-known people (the definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major outlet. Examples: The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, CNNSI) whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2007.

2. Points are awarded according to the following formula: the celebrity's age at the time of death subtracted from 100. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.

3. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (e.g., some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church or something).

4. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.

5. You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. E.g., a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.

6. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates, with the exception of police officers and members of the armed services who kill someone in the line of duty.

7. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 2359 GMT 31st December 2006. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may however make changes to your list anytime before 2359 31st December 2006 if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year.

There are also a couple of extraneous categories:

Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: person who picks the first death of 2007.

Quantity Not Quality Award: person who picks the most people who croak in 2007, regardless of their points value.

This is now the 4th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:

  • This is only a game
  • These are not death "Wish Lists" - You choose who you think might die. It's not my fault if that is influenced by who you want to die.
  • THe circus is the place for games, not discussion, so debating the right/wrong of what we are doing should be done somewhere else

Have fun, and remember to post your selection.

Alright then, in the interests of entering the sickness:

1) Doris Day (I thought she'd died years ago; apparently not)
2) Val Doonican (ditto)
3) Keith Richards (it has to happen sooner or later...)
4) Luciano Pavarotti (not been in the best of health for the last few years)
5) Sir Jimmy Savile (how much longer can he run marathons while smoking cigars?)
6) Michael Foot (didn't look all that well 25 years ago, probably even worse now)
7) Hugh Heffner (do I get extra points if he checks out while "on the job", as it were?)
8), 9) & 10) The Beverley Sisters - Joy, Babs and Teddie (unlikely they'll all go, but I know if I rely on one of them to snuff it, one of the others will instead...)
11) Danny DeVito (no logic, I've just got a feeling about him...)
12) Saddam Hussein (unless he manages to argue his case for an entire year, it's more or less a done deal)
13) Clive "Don't panic Mr Mainwaring!" Dunn (are you absolutely sure he isn't dead already?)

So there you go. Now watch in awe and wonder, as precisely none of them proceed to croak in 2007...

(ETA bold on names for easier recognition)

Well, you might be right, DOD, but going by the rules in Wet Kipper's OP, I'll only get points if Saddam's death isn't caused by his execution; if he tops himself or has a heart attack etc I reckon I'll be OK, but if he goes the way everyone expects him to... well, I'm willing to take that risk.

Alright! Since I followed last year's so avidly and I have a morbid sense of humour anyway:

1. Fidel Castro – He’s got to go some time.

2. Matthew Perry (Chandler from “Friends”) – Just a hunch – he can’t stay out of low-grade trouble.

3.Margaret Thatcher – I’m surprised she’s still around.

4. Queen Elizabeth II – She’s getting on, and I really want to have one “huge news story” on my list.

5. Ozzy Osbourne – Although he’ll probably make it to 100.

6. Saddam Hussein – Heart attack. I’m positive he’s not going to go the execution route so he’s on my list.

7. Paris Hilton – think of the points!

8. Stephen Hawking – although I’ll be upset if I’m right on this one.

9. Fred Phelps – someone’s going to flip out and shoot him one day.

10. Bill Clinton – which would put an interesting spin on Hillary’s election bid.

11. Dick Cheney – haven’t seen him in a while…

12. Prince Charles – No clue why, just a hunch

13. Pope Benedict – Which rounds out my list of world leaders.

1. Fidel Castro
2. Rosalynn Carter
3. Betty Ford
4. Boris Yeltsin
5. Mohammed Ali
6. Hugo Chávez
7. Steven Hawking
8. Hugo Chavez
9. Mario Scaramella (also poisoned with polonium)
10. Stine Giles (wife of cricketer)
11. Normando Hernández González (journalist)
12. Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn
13. Bob Dole

Definitely not a wish list though maybe I wouldn’t be too sad if a couple of them died sooner rather than later. Some of these borrowed from wise people who’ve posted and others I thought of on my own…and so did others who have posted.

I, Tubifex Maximus, decree that the following shall be gathered to their ancestors in the Year of our Lord Two thousand and Seven.

  • Philip 'Phil the Greek' Mountbatten;
  • Nelson Mandela, (nothing personal, it's strictly business);
  • Robert 'Bobby' Mugabe (Bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard);
  • Jalal Talabani, President of Iraq; (Balance of probabilities);
  • Jawad Al Maliki, Prime Minister of Iraq,(Ditto);
  • Ismail Haniya, Prime Minister of Palestine, (See above);
  • Ariel Sharon (I mean c'mon);
  • Ian Paisley, (Ulster can't say "Noi" to death);
  • Steven Hawking, (because he's poorly);
  • Cliff Richard, (because he deserves it);
  • Saddam Hussain al Majid, (because he'll never hang);

    oh yes, and...
  • Maggie's for the flames

I got a great deal of pleasure from compiling this list, something I'll have to tell my therapist about, obviously, with the exception of Nelson Mandela and Steven Hawking, but points mean prizes, so what can a guy do?

At first I thought people meant Warney, all-time great cricketer (but a bit of a berk IMHO) rather than the wreck that is a Pogue.
