I've had one 'success' this year - and the person I least wanted to die from my whole list (not that this is about wants, but about 'maybes'.) RIP Nick Clarke.
But, on the basis that everyone ages, I'm going to keep last year's list almost complete (Ms Minogue comes off it, because I'm really rather glad she seems to have recovered)...
quote: Originally posted by ferijen:
- Margaret Thatcher (this'll be the year)
- Prince Phillip (he's getting on a bit)
- Terry Wogan (looking better this year than last, but still a 'national treasure' and therefore notable enough)
- Bruce Forsyth (pleeeease)
- Ozzy Osborne (he's not that random, and he's young enough to score many points)
- Sharon Osborne (ditto)
- Nelson Mandela (Unfortunately)
- Pope Benedict (can't see him lasting long)
- Julie Andrews (can't be too careful)
- Judi Dench (I hope not)
- the Queen (cos if she snuffed it and she wasn't on my list, I'd be feeling most unchuffed
I'm also going to add
- Magnus Magnusson
- Jenni Murray
Both of these are also national treasures, both have recently been diagnosed with cancer. Here's hoping their recoveries do go well, but just in case...

1. Michael Foot (hardly any points but there you go) 2. Thatcher (maybe without the disclaimer) 3. Sadaam (get the feeling he might leap before being pushed) 4. Pete Doherty (needs to get it in before 11th March to make it a proper rock n roll death) 5. Fidel Castro (may well have already gone though...) 6. Bill Clinton (you never know Hills might give him a nudge to boost her White House bid if Obama and John McCain keep pushing her along) 7. Tony Benn (pushing the envelope a bit) 8. The Pope (ditto) 9. MacCauley Culkin (the wild card) 10. Ian Paisley (see 7 + 8) 11. St Cliff Morgan (should have been at 10 really) 12. Keith Richards (it's got to happen sometime) 13. OK, here's my list for 2007. Some old names from 2006, but my ageing politicians theme let me down (Pinochet and Ford excepted). 1) Luciano Pavarotti 2) Jane Tomlinson 3) Fidel Castro 4) Debbie Mathers (Eminem's mother) 5) Lee Hazlewood 6) Marcheline Bertrand 7) Ariel Sharon 8) Curtis Salgado 9) Harold Pinter 10) Zsa Zsa Gabor 11) Ken Kercheval 12) Mikhail Kalashnikov 13) Corin Redgrave
No room for Margaret Thatcher on the list - I've been preserving her for 3 years by selecting her, so she had better watch out in 2007.
Cheers,
Uriel.

We may get points for Saddam Hussein if he dies in some other way than his execution (suicide, killed in prison by other inmates, etc.) Right?

The rules say you are allowed to change your list if someone on it dies between your list being posted, and the actual start of the year in question.
They say nothing about changing your list simply becuase you find someone else who's so close to Death's door they can peek through the letterbox.
Otherwise once 1 contestant mentions someone gravely ill, everyone will want their lists updated.
I'm inclined not to allow changes once you've posted (other than for "early deaths"), but what does anyone else think ?

...if the rules will permit it, I will remove Saddam and replace him with Shane MacGowan. Some friends saw the Pogues live a few weeks ago, but apparently "Shane" and "live" weren't words that sat easily in the same sentence, if you get me.

well, if that were the case, why didn't it say so in the rules that I copied from Tom's post kicking things off last year?
having looked through last year's thread, (pre Jan 1st) the only people to ask for a "non-death" sub were yourself (trying to cash in on poor old Rick), Birdie (for Shane Pogue, IIRC), and Persephone Hazard who made such a mess of her list ("the remaining beatle") that she had to start all over again.
If it were up to me, your intial list should be final, with subs allowed for early deaths, but as I will not be keeping track of who posts which, and what the scores are, I cannot enforce such a rule.
It is therefore up to whoever wants to take that on. [ 29. December 2006, 14:41: Message edited by: Wet Kipper ]

But it wasn't discounted? I think its something that has happened in practice without any rules.
And some of us are so indicisive/haven't a clue that we need to change our minds.
I would be more than happy if for next years list, this rule was definitively imposed. It's not that I object to the rule, it's just that I assumed I could make a few tweaks again.

Dear sir
It has been pointed out by a friend (diolch, Sioni) that King Fahd has been dead for some 18 months. I'm not sure what would be more miraculous - his returning to life, or his dying again for the benefit of my Pool.
In the circumstances, may I be permitted to clarify that I meant the current ruler of the Kingdom of Saud, and as I have already made an adjustment for the late 38th (and first unelected) President of the United States my list would now read as follows: quote: 1. Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven
2. Nelson Mandela
3. Dick Cheney (life's gonna get tough in the Senate)
4. Mohammed Fayed (the conspiracy will catch up with him...)
5. Mohammed Ali (been ill for a long time)
6. Senator Edward Kennedy
7. al-Maliki (Iraqi PM)
8. Hosni Mubarak (Egyptian President)
9. Geoffrey Boycott (ex-England cricketer)
10. King Abdullah Bin-Abd-al-Aziz Al Saud, King and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia
11. Lord Tebbit (ex-Cabinet Minister)
12. Graeme Norton (just because)
13. Hugo Chavez (just a thought...)
With thanks in anticipation to the management
