In general, I believe that scoring twice is not permitted, because each entry has to refer to an individual person. In this case, Pope Benny, who, as at the start of the year, is The Pope ( assuming nothing happens in the next few days ).

If you wish to nominate Pope JP3, as the successor to Ben, then you could do so, although as long shots go, this takes the biscuit.

Another one with Benazir Bhutto coming in to bat at 6. I'll do a like-for-like swap, and go Pervez Musharaf instead. If that is OK? If not, PM me (I'm away for a few days) and I'll re-send the list.

And good luck to the people of Pakistan - they may need it...

RIP Benazir Bhutto [Tear]

I'll replace her with Hilary Clinton, another woman that stirs up enemies to a remarkable degree.

I've never played this, but why not...

1. Ozzie Osbourne - don't know why, just have a feeling...
2. Claude Levi Strauss - he's old.
3. Clive Dunn - so is he.
4. Margaret Thatcher
5. Nelson Mandela
6. Jimmy Saville - old and wierd.
7. Michael J. Fox - this would be a shame, but, hey, c'est la game.
8. Stephen Hawking - although I wonder if he can truly just go on forever...
9. Marguerite Patten - thanks for the idea, TreeBee - I often look at her and think she can't go on much longer. But maybe it's all that Woolton Pie!
10. Fidel Castro
11. Humphrey Littelton - that really would be a loss, but again, I can't imagine he'll go on much longer.
12. Bruce Forsyth - he's fit and hale and hearty, but the dancing will get him in the end...
13. Michael Foot.

I've mostly gone for the older end of the market - maybe not many points in it, but somehow it seems more decent to pick older people. Choosing younger people seems more unkind!!!

3. Dick Cheney (one way for Bush Jr to improve his approval ratings?)

4. Nawaz Sharif (would you want to be a politician in Pakistan at the moment?)

5. Mohammed Ali (been ill for a long time)

6. HRH Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Earl of Rothesay, etc (60 next year and I just wonder...)

7. Nouri al-Maliki (Iraqi PM)

8. Ariel Sharon (if Judaism allows the switching-off of life support)

9. Geoff Hurst (ex-England footballer)

10. HH Pope Benedict XVI

11. Lord Tebbit (ex-Cabinet Minister)

12. Pete Doherty (lifestyle bound to catch up with him sometime)

Following a good showing by my 2007 cancer themed list, I am following a different tangent this year:

1. Harry Patch
2. Henry Allingham
3. Edna Parker
4. Maria de Jesus
5. Arbella Ewing
6. Gertrude Baines
7. Tsuneyo Toyonaga
8. Tomoji Tanabe
9. George Francis
10. Walter Breuning

While you may not have heard of most of them, should any of them pass away in 2008 it will be widely noted.

Cheers,

As time goes on and if anyone named does die, can there be something posted on this thread about it?

And are any points awarded if we named someone and they died before the end of this year?

We keep this thread alive all year - when a prominent death is announced we all rush to see who's posted about it here, and who got points.

If one of your choices dies in the next five hours, you can replace them on your list.

There are so many people on this list who are just so old that one of these years one of them has to go. Yeah, that's all I'm looking for is one. After all, low expectations are better insurance against an unfulfilled life. Tis better to score and lose than to never score at all. And so on.

Farrah Fawcett

Some of these I am truly hoping that I give the gift of life, although I did have three hits last year.

I took Ariel Sharon off my list (his life support seems pretty stable) for a Young Person medium shot, although I heard rumors about rehab. If Mr. M.J. Fox cacks it instead of Shane, I'm going to be very, very, VERY annoyed on several levels.

I granted my list a healthy year last year, so am going to change it slightly.

1) Fidel Castro
2) Patrick Moore
3) Margaret Thatcher
4) Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (President of Iran)
5) Henry Kissinger
6) Nicole Ritchie (drugs + anorexia)
7) Ariel Sharon
8) Pete Docherty - unhealthy lifestyle
9) Michael Foot
10) Nigel Lawson
11) Jacques Chirac
12) Robert Mugabe
13) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari (granting him life would be good, the points if my choices don't survive would be high)

And are any points awarded if we named someone and they died before the end of this year?

BD - go check the 2007 thread - still live for a few hours, anyway. it will make all clear.

And we're off - or something like that. ('Off' might not be the best word here...)

We have 63 entrants this year.

The top 10 choices are:

30 Margaret Thatcher
28 Fidel Castro
25 Billy Graham
17 Muhammad Ali
16 Ariel Sharon
14 Robert Mugabe
11 Pete Doherty
11 Nelson Mandela
11 Dick Cheney
10 Stephen Hawking

We picked a total of 420 different names.

[These numbers are close but may not be completely accurate. I got most of the variant spellings, but probably missed some. You're a creative lot.]

I'll finish this year's scorecard and post a link later. Right now I'm going for a walk.

I missed the boat!

I had the same list of names last year as the year before, with a total of one departure, and would have put up the same names again - with the one addition.

Hate to point this out, but you have Hugo Chavez twice.
If I'm allowed to fix this now, I'll put Dick Cheney in there instead. If I'm not, I won't!

George Macdonald Fraser, author of the Flashman books died yesterday, aged 82 and from cancer. I don't think anyone had him. It does go to show that Uriel's advice was sound though.
