ROUND ONE : CHEMICAL ELEMENTS
In this opening round you must choose an element from the Periodic Table. The twist this year is that I am going to score each element according to the rule A=1,B=2,...,Z=26 so you should post the following information:
CHEMICAL ELEMENT ESTIMATED SCORE
The other competitors will put you straight if you get it wrong, and we love it when people get it wrong!
The person closest to the average score when all elements have been selected will be the one who is eliminated.
WE'RE OFF!

I'll strike while the iron is hot and submit an entry. I'll assume that the score will be the sum of the alphabet mapping for the two letters of the standard chemical abbreviation of the elements, thus yielding:
CHEMICAL ELEMENT: Pm (Promethium) ESTIMATED SCORE: 29
Here's a periodic table for anyone who might want one.

However, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry approved the name Roentgenium for element 111 on 1 November 2004, and the name Unununium has consequently been retired. Therefore I submit:
Chemical Element: Roentgenium (Rg) Possible Scores: 141 (25) For the estimated score I pick the average: 94.1

Oh dear chemistry... the years I spent memorising the periodic table..
I choose iron ( FE).
Quizzy you have not specified if our scores are based on the symbol or the total name.
If score is based on symbol, my score for Fe would be 11. If the score were based on the entire word my score would be 38. (I think)

I took QM's instructions to mean that we should post our element and our estimate of the score of that element. QM will calculate the official score of each entry (if nobody falls by the wayside by not posting one) and then the average. My first thought was that the score is calculated on the full name of the element but many seem to be scoring on the chemical symbol.
I shall go for gold with a score of 38. [ 18. September 2007, 12:18: Message edited by: The Rogue ]

GK, what The Rogue just said...
I think he included the "estimated" (I can see your interpretation of that now you make it clear, but I couldn't before) both to allow for people making mistakes and for the vagueness of his instructions.

Going by my experience in the quiz I suspect that any clarification will always be subject to the whims of QM at the time the round ends so all we can do is speculate and see what happens.
I do include QM himself in the above sentence.

Incidentally if I was playing I'd go Y, yttrium as it has a cool name Estimated average score 25 (and yes I know that is the score of mine)

Icklejen, the estimated score for your chosen element works this way. If you use a code where a=1, b=2 through to z=26 and allocate each letter in your word a score, your estimated score is the total of those numbers. So your word is worth 99 if you're scoring for all the letters, 25 if it's for the short form.
The averages could be the median, the mean and the mode. The mode is the modish one, the one that most people go for. The median is, as it sounds, the one which comes in the middle if you line them all up in numerical order. The mean is not mean at all, but rather fair as you collect in all the scores, add them all together, and then divide the total between all the people equally and see how many they'd get each.
So if five people entered and had estimated scores of 5, 18, 5, 7 and 15, the mode would be 5 because most people had chosen it. The median would be the middle one when they were in numerical order, so 5,5,7,15,18 making a median of 7. The mean would be the fair share: 5+5+7+15+18 makes 50 and 50 shared between the five people who entered the competition would make 10 each... thus the mean average is 10.
I would guess that Quizzy will go by the mean or the median, as the mode would be knock too many people out at this early stage in the game.
I am going for Xenon because it's a noble gas, not any of your common rabble of elements, so:

I'm completely baffled as to what we're estimating - our own score or the average score, or the air speed of an african swallow. therefore, I'm going with 29.

Corrected, expanded, and annotated entry.
I choose element 62, Samarium (Sm). (IMHO, an appropriately Biblical choice.)
My random guess to keep me away from the middle estimate is: 4.
Total points for first letter of element: 19.
Total points for abbrev. of element: 32.
Total points for full name of element: 95.

To be pedantic, QM never stipulated that we use the total (though we've all assumed that in our calculation). It could be the product, one of the averages, or (and this is my favorite) the number you get just by writing all the numbers next to each other (so Ca, for instance, would score 31).

As you have cost nobody their place your entry in the first round is sufficient to gain you full entry to the quiz. (I have sent a PM).
As for what I meant about full name or two letter abreviation ... and average, ... I am not sure whether or not I have decided on that yet, but I will, and when I do you will know.

I'm going for scandium - Sc because it is the lowest numbered element (21) that I can't remember hearing about.
You will all be interested to know that it is a rare metallic element, very light, soft and silvery. But what I find a more interesting general fact about this range of elements is that the even numbered elements are much more common than the odd numbered ones for a good, non-random reason. I never knew that.
My estimate is 22 - the number of players on a football pitch if nobody has been sent off.
