ROUND NINETEEN : MINESWEEPER

This idea failed the last time around.
This time I have revised the rules.
I have a grid six by six.
Across the top you will use numbers.
Down the side you will use letters.

There is one grid for the competitors.
There is another grid for the Also Rans.
You must choose five squares each.
They range from A1 through to F6.
One of those squares contains the mine.

Whoever hits the mine will be eliminated.

Good luck to each and every one.

Additional Rule: Competitors must choose squares that have not been nominated by any other competitor and Also Rans must choose squares that have not been nominated by any other Also Ran.

Tread Carefully. Stay away from the mine.

Do we post all our grid references at the same time. Or can we hedge are bets by posting just one to start with, and gradually post so as others have a chance of getting knocked out before we have posted all our options?

I'll use Flag's strategy and choose F6,F5,F4,F3,and F2. Lest anyone think I have overlapped PataLeBon, I am an also-ran, and she is a contender.

ROUND TWENTY : SKINS

You have all been upgraded at the Knockout Quiz site (apart from you Flags Fiend - have you joined up yet?) and with your limited new administration powers you are able to create new skins.

I thank Jedijudy for testing this round a while back and it is now here.

YOU HAVE TO CREATE A NEW SKIN

You can name the skin whatever you like and use any colours that you choose.

Once complete we will all vote on who has designed the best skin, so make it acceptable to the Knockout Quiz contestants and Also Rans.

As good design takes time you can keep making changes until the deadline which is 22:00 UK time on Friday 14th November.

Patdys was right about the Also Ran grid and because the exact location was not needed this year and I had it coded in my clue I can now use the same code next year as long as it remains my secret.

Flags Fiend stood on the mine but that matters not.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I'm getting in the mood for baking, and am especially anticipating the culinary bliss of combining spices... rolling out the buttery crust... filling our house with the heavenly aroma of... pumpkin pie. Sigh. My tried-and-true favorite recipe also seemed like a great inspiration for a new skin on the KOQ website.

Enjoy a little slice of "Pumpkin Pie" as my way of saying thanks to QM and all the other contestants for making this a great quiz! (Oh, and Jedijudy, I've already baked one just for the dessert buffet in the skybox--accompanied by a batch of freshly whipped cream to top it off!)

Oh well done. If you're right (I make no comment on that, but I have my suspicions based on my own calculations), Quizmaster will deduce that the code is no longer his secret, because you know it, and you (and anyone else who may have deduced the code) will lose the potential advantage of knowing his system (if he were to use it - I notice he said he can use it again, not that he will) next year.

It would have been much more sensible just to keep quiet.

You need to get to the admin screen. You have a PM at that site from the Quiz'ster which provides a link, or you can click on "Admin" on the bar nearest the top of the screen. Then you click on the "Skins/ Forum Colors" link. Then click "Create Skin" and start to play around. Creating a skin mostly involves choosing colors which you can mostly do by clicking on the "color chart" buttons and bearing mind that "000000" is black and "ffffff" is white. Here're a bunch more colors if you find those of the "color chart" limiting.

That fact just means that QM hasn't had a chance to give you admin privileges yet since at the time he was doing so for the rest of us, you did not have an account. I imagine he'll assess the available time for the project after he's had a chance to do so for you. Unfortunately, he has not granted us access to the "manage members" page, or I'd grant you the privileges myself.

Those colors are pretty cool. That being said, I ended up using color chart colors for everything except active and visited links.

Oh, and here's a link to a thread that lists all the readily available fonts for proboards (the software for the KOQ boards).

I can't figure out how to do skins. I think I signed up too late for the website. How did I miss that there was a separate website???? Geez.

Anyway, I looked at the "points" page and discovered I have no laugh (tickle) points. So, since I can't figure out the skins, let me give you a little laugh.

A French man with a parrot on his shoulder walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender asks, "Where'd you get that?"

"In France! There's millions of 'em," replies the parrot.

Gwai - NOW I see what you were getting at way back when. Don't ask me how I stumbled on that old page from over 5 weeks ago! Anyway, I'd chosen to combine the values of the letters to get the combination. My apologies for misreading the post. No wonder I have so many "confused" points.

(can you tell that I'm taking too much time from work this afternoon?)

He weren't takin' to us also rans.

I found this out the hard way. I got excited about creating a new skin and ran over to play with all the electronic colors and shapes. After reading and clicking and looking for quite a while, I had to conclude that I was not one of the "You have all been upgraded" ones. No, I am an also ran and, as such, get the short end of the stick.

Welcome to the 'hood, Patdys. Yeah, I don't like it either.

OK, That's fair.

The Skybox actually is more than enough compensation. Plus you can be more creative/destructive with the pressure off. It's a good 'hood.
